'A Life of Drawing' Exhibition at Roppongi Tsutaya
Beginning on March 20, 2026, Roppongi Tsutaya will host a two-person exhibition featuring artists Ueda Takumi and Suda Hinako, under the title 'A Life of Drawing.' This event will take place in the SHARE LOUNGE area on the second floor and will run until April 5, 2026. This exhibition aims to present the new works of both artists as a showcase of their ongoing creative processes in the realm of drawing.

Both Ueda and Suda are alumni of Tokyo University of the Arts and establish their artistic styles with a shared background in fine art. They exhibit a unique approach to their artwork while simultaneously reflecting a common underlying spirit. If one of the primary ambitions for a painter is to create illusions on a flat surface, Ueda and Suda may be tracing the edges of this objective to explore existence itself, or more broadly, to examine the world filled with concepts and symbols.

In a recent statement regarding the exhibition, Ueda expressed an encounter with a striking piece from Suda that instantly captivated him amid the overwhelming visual content found online. He describes the freshness of her work as its ability to transcend preconceived interpretations, presenting raw sensations before language can concretize them. Ueda articulates this experience, suggesting it evokes a profound confrontation with life itself and hints at Suda’s earnest attitude towards the complexities of contemporary existence.
As technological advances in AI resemble an unprecedented blend of the Renaissance and the Industrial Revolution, Ueda believes that the core of human activity remains fundamentally unchanged, echoing thoughts dating back to Aristotle's time. He feels that Suda’s art encapsulates the essence of human engagement in art, spiraling through the fabric of existence.
Drawing can be seen as an exchange of life's sensations, and Ueda hopes for the emergence of a dialogue between their artworks during the exhibition.
On the other hand, Suda notes that the title 'A Life of Drawing' resonates with emotional depth. It evokes the idea of being part of the ongoing energy flow of art history while collaborating with a senior artist from the same era, highlighting the continuity and evolution of artistic expression.
