Unveiling the Agricultural Treasures of Hokkaido

In a thrilling initiative organized by Pal System Co-operative Federation, approximately 40 participants journeyed from August 18 to 20, 2023, to explore the rich agricultural landscape of Tokachi, Hokkaido. This event, titled 'Let's Go to the Production Area: Exploring Summer Tokachi with Six Farm Visits and Harvest Experiences,' aimed to connect urban residents with the heart of Japan's farming practices.

The excursion included visits to six farms over three days, along with 7 facilities from Yotsuba Dairy. Participants engaged in hands-on experiences such as harvesting potatoes and broccoli, while also examining the intricate processes behind food production. One of the highlights was the unique 'barley straw rolling' activity, where participants rolled large straw bales traditionally used after wheat harvest—an engaging way to connect with farming practices directly.

Building Connections Through Experience

The initiative was facilitated by the Tokachi Food Self-Sufficiency Promotion Council, which comprises local farmers, agricultural cooperatives, and Pal System. Their collaboration focuses on enhancing food self-sufficiency through product development that utilizes local raw materials, alongside promoting regional revitalization efforts.

Participants echoed their invaluable experiences with remarks such as, "I joined thinking farming would be tough, but it seems rewarding and fun! Listening to the producers fueled my desire to avoid food waste" (a teenage male) and, "The sight of older producers working enthusiastically was wonderful. My family and I are now more aware of the deliciousness of vegetables and plan to seek out the producers we met in the catalogs" (a woman in her 40s).

A Sustainable Future Through Understanding

Seiji Fujikawa, Vice Chair of the Council and Chair of JA Otofuke's Vegetable Production Promotion Association, addressed the gathering, sharing, "By bringing people to the farm, we hope they understand the journey of food from production to their plate. We producers are earnest in delivering quality. It would mean a lot to us to have consumers support sustainable farming by enjoying our products." This sentiment encapsulates the goal of the tour—fostering a genuine connection between consumers and producers to cultivate sustainable practices and a shared appreciation for food.

The Heart of Pal System's Mission

Pal System has made it their mission to nurture relationships that mutually benefit consumers and producers. They focus on environmentally friendly practices and resource recycling while promoting direct sourcing. In addition to ensuring food safety, these experiences offer participants the chance to engage with producers, enhancing understanding and building a community of support and shared risk.

However, challenges such as an aging agricultural workforce and climate change threaten traditional practices. By continuing to facilitate opportunities for interaction, Pal System emphasizes the importance of a symbiotic relationship that can sustain and elevate both agriculture and culinary culture in the region.
