Exploring the Future of Food: Cultivated Meat at Osaka Expo 2025

Cultivated Meat: Shaping the Future of Our Plates

The "Cultivated Meat Future Creation Consortium" is set to showcase a groundbreaking event titled 'Cultivated Meat Journey 2025' on July 8 at the Osaka Healthcare Pavilion during the upcoming Osaka-Kansai Expo. This event aims to engage visitors with the future of food as it intersects with cultivated meat technology.

The consortium consists of six prominent partners: Osaka University Graduate School of Engineering, Shimadzu Corporation, Itoham Yonekyu Holdings, Toppan Holdings, Sigma X, and Zacros. Collectively, they are pioneering innovations in the field of cultivated meat through the use of advanced 3D bioprinting technology.

Event Highlights

The 'Cultivated Meat Journey 2025' event features a variety of engaging activities, including:
  • - Input Sessions: Led by consortium representative Professor Noriyasu Matsuzaki from Osaka University, attendees will be introduced to the vast potential of cultivated meat facilitated by 3D bioprinting technology.
  • - Sensory Experiences: Selected participants will have the opportunity to experience the aroma of grilled cultivated meat, heightening their understanding of its culinary aspects.
  • - Future Declaration: Key speakers will share insights on the societal implementation of cultivated meat, making a case for its role in future food systems.

The event will take place in three sessions: the first from 11:00 AM to 11:45 AM, the second from 2:30 PM to 3:40 PM, and the third from 4:30 PM to 5:15 PM. The venue, the Reborn Stage at the Osaka Healthcare Pavilion, does not require prior reservations but has seating capacity limited to approximately 150 for each session.

A Glimpse of Cultivated Meat

At the Osaka Healthcare Pavilion, which recently welcomed over 1 million visitors, the consortium is showcasing a prototype concept known as the 'Meat Maker.' This innovative tool envisions a future where premium marbled steaks can be created in personal kitchens, reflecting individual health preferences and tastes. The initiative encourages a paradigm shift from viewing meat as a product to purchase at a store to a customizable item that can be made at home.

The partners of the Cultivated Meat Future Creation Consortium formed in 2023, with Osaka University leading the charge in developing 3D bioprinting techniques. The consortium is responding to pressing global challenges like protein supply shortages due to population growth and environmental issues like greenhouse gas emissions. Their commitment to societal implementation of cultivated meat technology is a crucial aspect of their participation in the Osaka-Kansai Expo.

Future Exhibitions

In addition to the event scheduled on July 8, the consortium will be present in the Osaka Healthcare Pavilion during the expo period, from April 13 to October 13, 2025. Their exhibition will include cultivated meat and the Meat Maker concept model, positioned in the Reborn Experience Route, under the theme of 'Creating Sliced Marbled Meat at Home'.

The event underscores the consortium's mission to introduce cultivated meat into the mainstream, leveraging cutting-edge 3D bioprinting technology to innovate food production and consumption.
