Upcoming DeafBlind Communication Campus in Shinjuku
The Tokyo DeafBlind Association, a certified NPO, is set to host an engaging event titled
DeafBlind Communication Campus - Making the Invisible Visible on February 11, 2026. This exciting program aims to provide participants with a profound understanding of the challenges faced by individuals with both visual and hearing impairments.
A Multi-Faceted Learning Experience
The event will offer a comprehensive experience through films, lectures, and hands-on workshops, allowing attendees to not just learn but also to
feel,
think, and
experience the life of DeafBlind individuals. The venue will include two locations within Shinjuku: the Ushigome Tansu Community Hall and the Tokyo DeafBlind Support Center, ensuring a blend of education and emotional engagement.
Screening of a Pioneering Film and Live Discussions
One of the highlights of the day will take place at the Ushigome Tansu Community Hall, where the film
“Sakura-iro no Kaze ga Saku,” a touching narrative based on the life of Tomo Fukushima, the world's first DeafBlind university professor, will be screened. Following the film, Fukushima himself will grace the stage to share his journey of perseverance and research, emphasizing the importance of human connections, especially amidst challenges like loss of sight and hearing.
Interactive Communication Workshops
In addition to the film screening, attendees can engage in various interactive programs at the Tokyo DeafBlind Support Center. Here is what to expect:
- - Blind and Deaf Simulation Experiences: Participants will wear eye masks and earplugs to gain insight into the DeafBlind experience.
- - Communication Techniques: Learn about tactile sign language, low-vision sign language, braille, and finger braille through hands-on activities.
- - Mini Seminars: Focused sessions on educational techniques for DeafBlind children and the use of sign language and finger braille.
- - Assistive Technology Demos: Experience innovative devices and tools designed to facilitate communication and daily living.
- - Exhibitions and Photo Spots: Opportunities to engage with informational displays and capture memorable moments.
By actively participating, attendees can challenge their perceptions of communication and support, bringing awareness to the unique interactions that define the DeafBlind experience.
Engaging the Younger Generation
This event particularly targets university students and those studying welfare, education, nursing, and psychology, alongside general public members interested in supporting the DeafBlind community. As there has been a noticeable decline in younger individuals entering the field of interpreting and assisting DeafBlind persons, the program aims to be a stepping stone towards greater involvement and understanding among younger generations.
