BAILOR Partners with Veterans Against Suicide for Record-Breaking Awareness Mission
In a transformative collaboration, Huntsville's own BAILOR Group has cemented its role as the founding "Mission Accelerator" sponsor for Veterans Against Suicide's groundbreaking initiative, the Freedom Fighter mission. This ambitious project involves a grueling 6,000-mile journey around America's Great Loop, aimed at raising critical awareness about the tragic issue of veteran suicide.
The partnership, unveiled on July 10, 2026, underscores the urgency and magnitude of the situation faced by veterans today. According to recent statistics from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, 6,398 veterans tragically lost their lives to suicide in 2023. This stark reality fuels the motivation behind the Freedom Fighter mission, and with BAILOR at the helm as the main sponsor, the initiative is poised to capture national attention.
The mission, marked by its rapid timeline, is set to launch on July 24. A dedicated three-man crew will embark on their journey from Ditto Landing in Huntsville, aboard the Freedom Fighter, a vessel that has been meticulously restored from its days as a U.S. Coast Guard SAFE Boat Defender. Their goal is to not only complete the journey but to shatter the existing record for the fastest Great Loop traversal, currently standing at 12 days, 18 hours, and 10 minutes. Every mile covered will serve as a poignant reminder to veterans that they are not alone and vital support is available to them.
Sonya Bailor, the founder and CEO of BAILOR, passionately articulated the purpose behind their involvement: "A century ago, an explorer named Shackleton called for an impossible expedition, and many stepped up because those missions resonate with people. Meeting the Freedom Fighter crew, I recognized their willingness to undertake extraordinary risks for a cause that affects families across the nation. This mission merits a national stage, and we at BAILOR are committed to accelerating its path to success."
The Freedom Fighter mission is not just about setting records; it embodies a deeper commitment to the Haitian veterans and their families who are affected by the suicide crisis. The organization behind the initiative aims to spark critical conversations, encourage veterans to seek the help they may need, and assure communities that connections and support can provide lifesaving interventions. David Skrzecz, founder of Veterans Against Suicide, put it poignantly, "Twenty-two veterans die by suicide every day, and too many believe that no one is coming for them. This mission brings our oath to never leave a fallen comrade to life."
Throughout the upcoming voyage, followers of the mission will be able to engage with the crew through live GPS tracking, daily updates, and interactive social media coverage. In line with the mission’s ethos of community involvement, BAILOR and Veterans Against Suicide are actively seeking additional businesses and individuals to join them in this pivotal undertaking. Opportunities range from corporate sponsorships, mission sponsorships, to individual contributions starting as low as $22—an amount that honors the daily veteran suicide rate.
Veterans in crisis, or those who know a veteran in distress, are encouraged to reach out for support through the Veterans Crisis Line at 988. With the compelling backing of BAILOR and the undeniable importance of the Freedom Fighter mission, there is hope that unified efforts can create meaningful change.
