Orasis Pharmaceuticals, in partnership with Aspen Australia, has made significant strides in the pharmaceutical landscape by submitting a new drug application (NDA) for their product, BESKA (pilocarpine hydrochloride ophthalmic solution), designed to address presbyopia in adults. This submission is particularly notable as it marks the first regulatory move outside of the U.S., where the drug is known as QLOSI.

The NDA was presented to the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) in Australia and is supported by compelling data collected from two pivotal Phase 3 clinical trials, designated NEAR-1 and NEAR-2. These studies collectively evaluated the efficacy, safety, and tolerability of BESKA among more than 600 adult participants suffering from presbyopia, a common age-related condition characterized by the gradual loss of the ability to focus on near objects. Both trials not only met their primary endpoints but also achieved key secondary goals, resulting in a statistically significant improvement in distance-corrected near visual acuity (DCNVA) without any perceptible loss in distance vision.

In the trials, it was reported that the adverse effects were minimal, with rates for the most common side effects, headache and instillation site pain, recorded at 6.8% and 5.8%, respectively, demonstrating the safety profile of BESKA.
