FLATTE’s Commitment to Trainer Excellence
The fitness industry is experiencing significant growth, and FLATTE, under the leadership of CEO Masayuki Funakubo, is not just riding the wave but actively shaping it. Based in Setagaya, Tokyo, FLATTE operates a diverse range of fitness brands, including semi-personal gyms, personal machine Pilates, and women-only 24-hour gyms. It has recently made headlines by unveiling a comprehensive trainer development and evaluation system aimed at raising service quality to new heights.
Striving for Consistent Quality Across Locations
As FLATTE expands its footprint, maintaining a stable level of service quality across all locations has become increasingly important. Relying solely on years of experience is no longer sufficient; instead, a structured development system is essential. The newly introduced training system spans roughly three weeks and focuses on several key areas such as service understanding, foundational knowledge about the body and machines, practical skills, customer interaction, and lesson progression.
Trainers will engage in a step-by-step learning journey that begins with a fundamental understanding of FLATTE’s service philosophy and how to engage effectively with clients. This foundational knowledge equips trainers to provide a robust service experience to the clients they support.
The Importance of Standardized Service Quality
Part of FLATTE’s commitment to trainer development includes the upcoming launch of the
FLATTE Instructor College in April 2026. This institution will focus not only on basic training but also on practical assessments, lesson observations, and ongoing feedback, representing a commitment to continuous service quality improvement. The expansion of fitness brands, especially personal machine Pilates and semi-personal gyms, accentuates the need for standardized service quality. Tailoring individual lessons to meet each client's body conditions and goals is paramount.
FLATTE’s training structure combines foundational learning, skill assessments, role-playing, and feedback, ensuring that every trainer, regardless of their experience, can deliver a consistent level of service.
Four Pillars of Development
FLATTE’s development and evaluation system is built on four key pillars:
1.
Cognitive and Technical Foundations: Trainers begin by grasping FLATTE’s core service concepts and the philosophy behind client interaction. Through structured learning, trainers acquire essential knowledge on body mechanics, machine operations, and lesson structures.
2.
Hands-on Assessments and Role-playing: Trainers engage in practical assessments simulating real lessons. In addition to teaching movements, they practice how to communicate effectively with clients, soothe concerns, guide trial lessons, and maintain supportive communication for ongoing participation. This context-based learning enhances their responsiveness to real-world scenarios.
3.
Gradual Expansion of Responsibilities: FLATTE adopts a gradual approach to assigning responsibilities post-training. Rather than allow new trainers to dive in completely, their roles expand based on performance evaluations. Supervisors provide tailored feedback and support, ensuring that trainers can grow progressively into their responsibilities.
4.
Ongoing Feedback Mechanism: Development does not stop after the foundational training. Continuous feedback and reflection on real customer interactions help uncover challenges, driving ongoing improvement in both trainer capability and service quality.
Embracing Diverse Backgrounds
FLATTE recognizes that experiences beyond the fitness industry can enrich trainers’ abilities. For example, staff who previously worked as childcare professionals leverage their skills in personalized communication and nurturing to support clients effectively. This commitment to utilizing diverse backgrounds reinforces the value trainers bring to the FLATTE family.

Future Directions
FLATTE plans to unify the development and training of trainers alongside store managers and operational support as it continues to grow both its locations and franchise opportunities. By standardizing training while nurturing individuality among team members, FLATTE aims to create an environment where clients feel secure and valued.
As FLATTE ventures into new territory, the voices of its staff will continue to be a cornerstone of its outreach through podcasts and interview content. This storytelling serves to illuminate the journey behind the scenes at FLATTE and foster connections with its community.
