The Japan Frescoball Association (JFBA), led by director Kenji Kuboshima, has made waves with the official launch of Japan's first ever 'Frescoball Rice', sourced from the booming agricultural region of Shobara city, Hiroshima. This new product, spearheaded by Masayuki Amano, representative of the Hiroshima Frescoball Club, blends the excitement of the sport with local agriculture. While managing his own business, Amano also engages in rice farming, revealing a personal connection to the product. The initiative aims to enrich both the local community and the Frescoball movement, contributing part of the profits to support activities of JFBA and Hiroshima Frescoball Club.
Shipping for the Frescoball Rice has commenced after the rice harvest at the end of September. It’s readily available for purchase through the official JFBA online store, with no shipping fees. The rice, cultivated from the Akisakari variety, stands out as 'rice produced by Frescoball players, for Frescoball players.' This project also aims to symbolize connectivity and community in a time when there are growing concerns about rice shortages across Japan.
On October 12, the Hiroshima Frescoball Club will host a free trial event at the 31st Hiroshima Sports and Recreation Festival. Taking place at Hiroshima Wide Area Park’s auxiliary competition venue, attendees will have the opportunity to engage in the sport on a grassy field rather than a beach. Frescoball, originally developed on the beautiful Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro, can be enjoyed anywhere, enhancing its appeal. Everyone is encouraged to participate and experience this unique sport, which emphasizes collaboration and enjoyment over competition.
Amano expresses pride in producing food as a small-scale rice farmer and is committed to ensuring quality from seedling preparation to milling. "I wish to expand the circle of connection created by Frescoball Rice," he shared. He looks forward to creating enjoyable experiences through sports while fostering community connections and hopes this is just the beginning for future gatherings.
So what exactly is Frescoball? Born in 1945, Frescoball is a beach sport originating from Copacabana beach where players aim to rally rather than compete against each other. Over the years, it has garnered a global following and has taken root in various countries. Each game takes place over five minutes, maintaining a distance of seven meters between partners, allowing for cooperation and teamwork. This collaborative approach has earned it the moniker of 'the sport of empathy.' As of September 2025, Japan boasts 28 JFBA-sanctioned regional clubs and six approved student organizations, nurturing local communities through this engaging sport. Established in 2013, the JFBA works diligently to share and promote the benefits and excitement of Frescoball throughout Japan.
