OBAP Responds to Aviation Hiring Directive with Emphasis on Inclusion and Standards
OBAP's Response to Secretary Duffy on Aviation Hiring Standards
The Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals (OBAP) issued a statement on February 18, 2026, in response to a new merit-based pilot hiring directive. The organization's Board Chair, Tennesse Garvey, highlighted that OBAP is committed to maintaining the highest professionalism and safety standards in aviation. He emphasized that their mission focuses on inspiring, mentoring, and developing aerospace professionals who meet and surpass strict FAA and industry benchmarks.
Central to OBAP's philosophy is the concept of 'OBAP Excellence,' which signifies an unwavering belief that safety is intrinsically linked to excellence in the field. Garvey pointed out potential misunderstandings regarding the role of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in the aviation sector. He clarified that DEI initiatives do not aim to reduce established standards. Instead, they seek to dismantle barriers that hinder all qualified candidates from competing under the same criteria that define the industry.
Garvey reassured that the existing rigorous evaluations, certifications, and recurrent proficiency checks remain sacrosanct and non-negotiable for all aspiring aviators, thereby retaining the integrity of the hiring process.
As the dialogue coincides with Black History Month, OBAP pays tribute to historical figures like the Tuskegee Airmen. Their bravery and commitment to excellence under challenging circumstances set a high standard for military aviation and training. OBAP honors all past and present Black leaders in aviation who have consistently demonstrated that diversity not only enhances but also strengthens safety and professionalism in the industry.
With a legacy spanning over 50 years, OBAP pledges to continue advocating for those wishing to build aviation careers based on their merits. The organization emphasizes the crucial need for policies that not only fortify the U.S. aviation workforce but also respect the dignity and potential of every individual aiming to serve in this distinguished field.
OBAP invites constructive discussions around initiatives that can further enrich the aviation landscape, ensuring equitable access while upholding the highest safety benchmarks. This commitment is instrumental in shaping a diverse and robust future for the aviation sector, fortified by inclusivity and unyielding professional standards.
