Celebrating Water Day: A Gathering to Reflect on Water Sustainability and Resources



On July 31, 2023, the 50th commemorative event of "Water Day" will take place, marking the beginning of a week dedicated to the importance of water resources. Every year, August 1 is recognized as "Water Day," leading into "Water Week," which focuses on raising awareness about the essential nature of water circulation, the finite nature of water resources, and the need for sustainable development of water sources. This year, the event titled "A Gathering to Consider Water" aims to encourage discussions and promote understanding of these critical issues.

The gathering will be hosted at the Nishio Hall, located on the second floor of the Japan Fire Center in Minato Ward, Tokyo.

Program Highlights


The event will feature two keynote speeches by notable experts in the field:
- Keynote Speech 1: “Living on a Wonderful Water Planet” by Mamoru Mohri, Astronaut and Honorary Director of the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation
- Keynote Speech 2: “The Blessings of Water for the Future - Living with Climate Change” by Eiichi Nakakita, Honorary Professor and Special Advisor to the President at Kyoto University

Additionally, initiatives related to water will be introduced by:
- Keiichi Tanizaki, Tokyo Metropolitan Government’s Director of Urban Development
- Masaru Tamegaya, Representative Director, Suntory Holdings Limited
