Building AI-Optical Networks: A Catalyst for New Growth in the AI Era

The Emergence of AI-Optical Networks in the AI Era

In the rapidly evolving landscape of technology, the intersection between artificial intelligence and telecommunications has created fertile ground for innovation. This was vividly demonstrated during the AI-ON Summit held at MWC Shanghai 2026. The summit, themed "Networks for AI, AI for Networks," brought together leaders from the IT and communications sectors, including the Chinese Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT) and Huawei, to discuss transformative trends in optical networks.

The session focused on how AI is reshaping network capabilities, allowing for enhanced services that can meet the surging demands of a digitized world. The attendees delved into pioneering developments in ultra-gigabit service capabilities and network computing integration, reflecting the robust potential for growth in this domain. During the summit, Huawei introduced ten groundbreaking AI-optical network products, designed to enable operators to establish fully optical AI-focused target networks.

Innovations on Display: AI and Optical Networks

The summit also underscored significant advancements outlined in the ION-2030 vision presented by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in October 2025. According to Ao Li, Vice President of CAICT, the synergy between optical networks and AI holds promising opportunities for the future. He stated, “Optical networks and AI will empower each other, effectively supporting widespread computing applications while leveraging large AI models and agents to transition towards high-level autonomous networks.” This shift is pivotal as China moves from simply offering gigabit connections to enhancing services with 10G capabilities, thereby significantly improving broadband quality and user experience.

China Mobile, China Telecom, and other prominent operators presented their latest implementations of AI technologies to augment connectivity and enhance service delivery. These enhancements are designed to offer superior AI application capabilities alongside premium broadband services. Furthermore, innovations aimed at upgrading private line connectivity and integrated computing network solutions promise to provide businesses with high-quality access to computational resources.

Shaping a New Era of Operations

As the telecommunications sector embraces this new era punctuated by AI, operators are beginning to comprehend the substantial value that advanced network operations can generate. Through intelligent upgrades and innovation, telecom companies are poised to maximize their service capabilities, expand offerings, and realize sustainable growth. The AI-ON initiative empowers operators to create sophisticated networks that are both all-optical and AI-driven, fostering an environment conducive to seamless service execution in an AI age.

Huawei is spearheading this transformative endeavor with an extensive update of its ten innovative AI-ON products. Kim Jin, Vice President of Huawei’s Optical Business Product Line, discussed the company's commitment to advancing optical AI convergence, ensuring coordinated growth between optical and AI technologies. The AI-FAN and AI-OTN product lines enable operators to build fully optical networks tailored for AI applications, achieving ultra-gigabit service speeds while ensuring robust service reliability.

In a bid to popularize ultra-gigabit speed, Huawei is launching a range of AI-FTTR products, including smart hubs and Wi-Fi 7 solutions designed for optimal connectivity. To lead in 10G service standards, the company has unveiled the industry’s first high-density 50G PON service board for mass commercial use, alongside upgraded FTTR systems designed to support advanced Wi-Fi configurations.

Additionally, Huawei is setting the stage for sub-millisecond computing networks with three innovative Mini OXC solutions that feature full integration of OSU/fgOTN and OTN technologies. For enhanced capabilities in national and international data centers, the launch of a pioneering clustered OTN solution and integrated submarine cable solutions promises substantial enhancements.

As Huawei continues to introduce fail-safe network solutions, such as AI DAS and WSON, the vision for a resilient AI-driven optical network becomes clearer. These initiatives represent Huawei’s dedication to facilitating the transformation of the telecommunications sector, paving the way for a new era of connectivity that is fully integrated with the realities of AI.

By harnessing these advancements, telecommunications companies are envisaging a future where they not only keep pace with technological innovation but also shape the digital transformation landscape, driving unprecedented growth in the era of artificial intelligence.
