Tony Marchbanks Takes the Helm at Southern Land Company

Southern Land Company, a renowned Nashville-based real estate developer, has recently appointed Tony Marchbanks as its National President of Homebuilding. This appointment marks a significant step for the firm as it continues to expand its operations across Tennessee, Texas, and Colorado.

Based out of Plano, Texas, Marchbanks will oversee Southern Land’s extensive homebuilding platform, which currently includes four active master-planned communities. These communities span over 5,000 lots and represent the company’s commitment to creating award-winning environments characterized by thoughtful planning and quality architecture.

Tim Downey, the Founder and CEO of Southern Land Company, expressed enthusiasm for Marchbanks' addition to the team. He stated, “Homebuilding and community development are foundational to our story.” Downey emphasized that Marchbanks’ proven expertise in leading strong teams and successfully driving operations will be crucial for the company's ongoing growth.

Brian Sewell, President and COO of Southern Land Company, also highlighted Marchbanks' extensive background in the homebuilding industry. Marchbanks comes to Southern Land with 34 years of experience, all accumulated at Highland Homes, where he ascended to the role of President and COO. His deep understanding of the industry, coupled with his experience in managing homebuilding operations, has equipped him with the tools necessary to enhance Southern Land's national homebuilding pipeline.

During his tenure at Highland Homes, Marchbanks skillfully expanded the company’s operations, particularly in major Texas markets. His initiative towards launching the Houston market contributed to the creation of approximately 1,000 homes annually, and he was instrumental in the company's state-wide operations that produced over 4,000 luxury homes each year. His passion for homebuilding is not just in the numbers but also in the commitment to excellence that he embodies.

Southern Land Company is poised for growth, with Marchbanks joining at a pivotal moment. The organization is looking to enhance the real estate landscape, particularly in burgeoning communities like Dripping Springs, Texas, and Erie, Colorado. Marchbanks commented, “I’m excited to join Southern Land Company and help build on the momentum it has created in developing award-winning master-planned communities.” He views delivering distinctive living environments as a priority and believes in cultivating talent to ensure lasting success.

In his academic journey, Marchbanks earned a Bachelor of Science in Construction Management from the University of Oklahoma and furthered his education through Stanford University’s Executive Development Program in 2025.

Southern Land Company’s Texas portfolio is expansive, showcasing multiple active communities created since 2006. This includes innovative projects like Tucker Hill in McKinney and Deco 969, a luxury mixed-use community in Fort Worth that opened its doors in 2024. The company has meticulously developed a mix of single-family and multifamily properties, ensuring quality living spaces throughout Texas.

The firm’s national footprint is amplified by flagship projects, including Westhaven in Franklin, Tennessee, set to feature over 3,500 homes, and Westerly in Erie, Colorado, encompassing 800 acres with plans for 3,100 homes. In addition, Southern Land has made strides with Fairington in Nolensville, Tennessee, introducing 700 new homes, and Mare Island, a revitalized community in Vallejo, California, loaded with mixed-use opportunities.

As Southern Land Company continues to expand its influence in the real estate market, Tony Marchbanks’ leadership will be pivotal in navigating the dynamic landscape of homebuilding. His dedication to excellence, customer experience, and team development will be instrumental in pushing the boundaries of what master-planned communities can offer in the ever-evolving housing market.
