CSL Limited Welcomes Deborah Waterhouse as New CEO & Managing Director, Charting Future Growth

In a significant leadership change, CSL Limited has appointed Deborah Waterhouse as its new Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, effective February 1, 2027. This announcement comes after a rigorous global search process executed by CSL's Board of Directors. Waterhouse brings over 25 years of experience in the pharmaceutical sector, having successfully led various complex specialty pharma companies across key regions including the US, UK, Europe, and Australia.

Since 2017, Waterhouse has served as the CEO of ViiV Healthcare, a major player in the HIV treatment space and a joint venture primarily owned by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK). Under her leadership, ViiV Healthcare reported substantial sales figures amounting to £7.7 billion in GSK's financial year 2025. Waterhouse's extensive track record includes previous roles at GSK where she oversaw major operations in U.S. vaccines, primary care, and held the position of General Manager for Australia and New Zealand from 2008 to 2012.

CSL Chair, Dr. Brian McNamee, expressed confidence in Waterhouse's ability to drive the company's momentum, saying, "The next chief executive must advance our commercial performance while simplifying operations without compromising the scientific integrity that underpins CSL. Deborah has demonstrated this capability several times." McNamee believes that her expertise in managing biopharmaceutical businesses and her familiarity with both U.S. and Australian markets make her the ideal leader to guide CSL into a new phase of growth.

"CSL is one of the exceptional names in our industry," stated Waterhouse, reflecting on her previous experiences in Australia. "The work done at CSL saves lives daily, from plasma collection staff to the scientists developing essential medicines. My responsibility will be to sustain this momentum while navigating toward sustainable growth for both patients and shareholders."

Following Waterhouse's appointment, Gordon Naylor will remain as the Interim CEO until the official transition on February 1, 2027, at which point he will resume his position on the Board as a non-Executive Director. Waterhouse will maintain her base in the UK but is expected to spend significant time in Australia, the US, and CSL's operational hubs worldwide, ensuring a smooth transition while establishing her presence across CSL's major markets.

As part of her employment terms, Waterhouse's base salary will be £1.5 million annually, with additional incentives tied to the company's performance metrics, reinforcing her stake in CSL's future success. The Board has unanimously approved her appointment, recognizing the vital role she will play in continuing to enhance CSL's global standing in the healthcare arena.

The detailed portfolio accompanying her appointment includes structured remuneration to align with both immediate and long-term performance goals, thereby cementing her commitment to CSL's vision of saving lives through cutting-edge science.

With Waterhouse at the helm, CSL is poised to evolve its operations, innovate in therapeutics, and solidify its reputation within the biopharmaceutical landscape, fostering trust and reliability among patients and investors alike. As CSL embarks on this new chapter, the excitement surrounding Waterhouse's leadership illustrates the potential for dynamic growth and transformative impact in the healthcare industry.
