Two-Time Olympic Champion Félix Sánchez Shines at the 2025 Punta Cana Carnival

On February 22, 2025, the vibrant streets of Punta Cana were alive with music, color, and artistic expression, as the sixteenth edition of the Punta Cana Carnival unfolded. Organized by Grupo Puntacana, the event gathered over 15,000 local and international visitors who came together to celebrate a feast of cultural diversity. The carnival has quickly solidified its status as a premier gathering of art and culture in the Dominican Republic, drawing world-class performers and artists alike.

The highlight of the carnival was the coronation of Félix Sánchez, a two-time Olympic and world champion, as King Momo. This prestigious title is reserved for prominent figures in Dominican society who inspire through their accomplishments in sports and culture. Sánchez is hailed as one of the greatest athletes in Dominican history, having made his mark by winning gold in the 400-meter hurdles at the 2001 and 2003 World Championships, and famously clinching the Dominican Republic's first Olympic gold medal at the Athens Games in 2004, followed by a second Olympic victory in London 2012.

The annual celebration commenced with a ceremonial coronation, where Félix Sánchez was honored in a huge parade that radiated joy and laughter. He was driven in a beautiful collector's car by Frank Rainieri, founder of Grupo Puntacana, showcasing a moment of pride that resonated throughout the crowd. The parade continued with an impressive display of 54 parade groups, featuring more than 1,500 performers who dazzled the audience with their extravagant masks, costumes, and dynamic dance routines from various regions, including Punta Cana, La Vega, and even international participants from places like Colombia.

This year's carnival took on an added layer of charm with 20 designated stages for spectators to enjoy performances, as well as 10 bleachers offering free admission, creating a family-friendly atmosphere for all ages. The lively environment was complemented by food trucks serving delicious local flavors, live music, and various forms of entertainment that filled The Village Punta Cana with excitement.

For the first time, the carnival included a Craft Bazaar that showcased exclusive carnival-themed souvenirs. Located at the fourth stage of Galerías Puntacana, the bazaar allowed attendees to relish in unique mementos, further enhancing their festival experience. This year, the Muses of Punta Cana made an enchanting appearance, paying tribute to the rich tapestry of Dominican fruits and the natural diversity of the island. Adorned in costumes that featured elements inspired by fruits like pineapple, coconut, papaya, and dragon fruit, the Muses created a stunning visual feast that symbolized the Caribbean identity.
