China's Trade with Central and Eastern European Countries Experiences Significant Growth in Early 2026

China's Trade with Central and Eastern European Countries Gains Momentum

In a remarkable development for international trade, new customs data indicates that trade between China and Central and Eastern European countries (CEEC) witnessed a notable rise of 11% year-on-year in the first half of 2026, reaching an impressive 580.12 billion yuan (approximately $85.57 billion). This growth is part of a consistent performance that has characterized trade relations in this region over the last decade.

A Decade of Growth

Lyu Daliang, a spokesperson from the General Administration of Customs of China (GACC), highlighted that the current trade volume is 3.7 times greater than that recorded during the same period in 2012. Such sustained growth reflects the deepening ties between China and the CEEC, driven by mutual investments and collaborative projects.

The Role of Chinese Investment

Chinese investments are increasingly fueling bilateral trade dynamics. Over recent years, Chinese firms have established vehicle production and research facilities in notable CEEC countries like Serbia and Poland, along with several battery manufacturing plants in Hungary. Such investments not only boost trade volumes but also foster technological advancements and job creation in the region.

Vehicle and Battery Trade Surging

The statistics further reveal that trade in vehicles and auto parts between China and CEEC reached 59.53 billion yuan, while trade in lithium-ion batteries amounted to 30.01 billion yuan. As the demand for electric vehicles and sustainable energy solutions grows, this segment is expected to continue on an upward trajectory, benefiting both regions significantly.

Expanding into High-Tech Collaborations

The cooperation landscape is broadening, particularly in the realm of artificial intelligence. One notable initiative is the joint venture between Chinese companies and Serbia to develop a humanoid robot production facility, illustrating a shared vision for technological innovation.

Infrastructure Investment and the Belt and Road Initiative

Infrastructure development, prominently featured in the Belt and Road Initiative, has further enhanced trade by improving connectivity within the region. Recent construction projects initiated by Chinese enterprises in countries such as Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina are expected to facilitate an increase in demand for Chinese products, reinforcing economic ties.

Booming Agricultural and Food Trade

The agricultural sector also reflects dynamic growth, thanks to enhanced cooperation on animal and plant quarantine and food safety regulations. In the first half of 2026, bilateral agricultural trade surged to 7.58 billion yuan, marking a 16.2% increase over last year. Significant imports from the CEEC included cocoa and aquatic products, both witnessing remarkable boosts of 57.6% and 36.8% respectively.

Furthermore, China's agricultural exports to the CEEC grew by 11.8%, with walnut exports up 28.3% and pet food exports climbing 13.7%. This exchange reflects an increasingly diversified trade relationship that is benefitting consumers on both sides.

Strengthening Customs Collaboration

To bolster trade security and ensure efficient customs procedures, the establishment of the China-CEEC Customs Information Center in April 2021 has proven pivotal. This cooperative framework has facilitated the exchange of policy information and trade risk monitoring, further solidifying trade relations.

In a concluding statement, Lyu Daliang emphasized the commitment of Chinese authorities to strengthen partnerships with CEEC to foster sustained economic and trade development. The promising statistics for the first half of 2026 exemplify the potential for future advancements in this essential area of global economics.
