Singapore Biennale 2025: 'Pure Intention'

This October, the Singapore Biennale 2025 will unfold under the theme 'pure intention,' inviting audiences to perceive the vibrant life of Singapore through a fresh lens. This exciting event marks the eighth edition of this acclaimed international contemporary art exhibition, organized by the Singapore Art Museum (SAM) and commissioned by the National Arts Council of Singapore.

Over 100 artworks from more than 80 artists will be displayed throughout various locations in Singapore, including numerous new commissioned pieces that cater to a diverse audience. The Biennale's theme encourages the exploration of the urban and social environment, inviting everyone, regardless of background, to reimagine the city through the layers of history and culture that define it.

A Multifaceted Experience

The Biennale aims to activate everyday spaces across Singapore, from colonial landmarks to bustling shopping districts and serene parks. This artistic intervention is designed to inspire visitors to view familiar locales from new perspectives, shedding light on their historical and cultural significances.

Curators Duncan Bass, Hsu Fang-Tze, Ong Puay Khim, and Selene Yap have emphasized the importance of this event: "Singapore Biennale 2025 provides a unique opportunity to reflect on how our city is shaped by its architecture, systems, and the people within it. This edition invites various voices to respond to themes of rapid urban development, historical contradictions, and speculative futures, clarifying Singapore's diverse realities within global narratives. Highlights of the Biennale

• - SAM at Tanjong Pagar Distripark: This location serves as the central venue for the Biennale, showcasing new commissioned works alongside pieces from Singapore's National Collection.
• - Civic District: Visitors can explore the rich histories of communities that have shaped the nation, where Gala Porras-Kim will contemplate the experiences of migrant worker communities through poetry.
• - Rail Corridor South: An old railway transformed into a nature path, this area will feature an immersive installation by Joo Choon Lin, encouraging audiences to reinterpret human perception as an evolving experience.
• - Orchard Road: Singapore's iconic shopping avenue, where everyday spaces adapt amidst rapid urban change. Eisa Jocson's karaoke videos will be displayed, celebrating the narratives of resilience and struggle among Filipino domestic workers.

Tickets and Access

Early bird tickets for SAM at Tanjong Pagar Distripark can be purchased until October 30, 2025. Additionally, visits to other Biennale locations in public spaces across Singapore will be free, allowing all to participate in this rich cultural experience.
