UAE Launches World's First Round-the-Clock Renewable Energy Project

On October 24, 2025, the United Arab Emirates marked a significant milestone in the field of renewable energy by breaking ground on the world's first large-scale project designed to provide round-the-clock renewable energy. This pioneering initiative aims to establish a new global benchmark for clean energy, aligning with the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the President of the UAE.

The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by His Highness Sheikh Theyab bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who witnessed the start of construction for this ambitious solar and battery storage project. Once operational, it is expected to generate a staggering 1 gigawatt (GW) of baseload renewable energy, available 24/7.

As the world grapples with the challenges posed by intermittent renewable energy sources, this project has been designed to overcome such hurdles by integrating advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI) for enhanced forecasting and smart dispatch capabilities. This will allow the UAE to provide energy at a globally competitive price while meeting increasing demands for sustainable power.

The partnership between Masdar and Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) is central to the success of this project. Masdar, recognized globally for its commitment to renewable energy, along with EWEC, is driving this innovative project which integrates a 5.2 GW photovoltaic solar power plant with a state-of-the-art battery energy storage system (BESS) featuring a capacity of 19 gigawatt-hours (GWh).

In remarks during the ceremony, His Excellency Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and Chairman of Masdar, expressed pride in the collaboration and the potential this project holds. He stated, “This endeavor highlights the leadership of the UAE in promoting clean energy solutions globally and demonstrates our commitment to sustainability and innovation in the energy sector.”

One of the project’s most notable outcomes is its anticipated impact on job creation and environmental sustainability. With an investment exceeding $6 billion, it is expected to create over 10,000 jobs while averting approximately 5.7 million tons of carbon emissions annually. This positions the UAE not just as a leader in renewable energy, but as a hub for technological innovation, particularly as the nation pivots towards a future powered by AI and digital economies.

As the project takes shape, it will serve as a model for similar initiatives worldwide. Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, CEO of Masdar, remarked on the importance of this venture, indicating that it exemplifies the ability of renewable energy to provide continuous power. “By overcoming the challenges associated with energy intermittency, we can supply sustainable energy crucial for fueling advancements in AI and other technologies,” he noted.

Expected to be operational by 2027, this groundbreaking project not only promises to enhance the UAE's energy landscape but also offers a blueprint for a sustainable future in renewable energy, addressing the needs of both domestic and international markets. As nations around the world pursue their energy transitions, the UAE's initiative demonstrates that it is possible to achieve a reliable and competitive renewable energy supply.

In conclusion, the UAE's first round-the-clock renewable energy project sets a precedent that could inspire global efforts towards creating sustainable energy solutions that meet the needs of a rapidly evolving world. With a clear focus on innovation, job creation, and a commitment to reducing carbon emissions, this venture by Masdar and EWEC is poised to leave a lasting legacy in the renewable energy sphere.
