Kentucky American Water Requests Rate Increase to Fund $108 Million in Water Infrastructure Improvements

Kentucky American Water Seeks Rate Increase

Kentucky American Water has officially submitted a request to the Kentucky Public Service Commission (PSC) in order to implement new water rates. This request aims to support an essential investment of approximately $108 million in infrastructure improvements that will significantly enhance the quality and reliability of water services for over half a million residents across 13 counties in the state.

Robert Burton, the President of Kentucky American Water, emphasized the necessity of such investments, asserting that they directly contribute to the communities served. He stressed the importance of maintaining reliable service and ensuring the safety and health of customers by improving water quality from treatment to tap. The company's proactive planning and strategic investment reflect its commitment to enhancing water systems, which are integral to the community's well-being.

The proposed rate change would result in an approximate increase of $8 per month for the average residential customer using about 4,030 gallons of water monthly, if the PSC approves the request. This adjustment is part of Kentucky American Water’s plan to modernize aging water infrastructure, which includes replacing old water pipes, upgrading storage facilities, wells, pumping stations, hydrants, and meters, along with necessary improvements to water treatment facilities to comply with regulatory standards.

This rate filing marks the first step in a lengthy review process by the PSC, which generally spans 10 months and provides various channels for customer participation, including written comments and advocacy from consumer organizations. The review allows the community to engage in discussions about necessary water service adjustments. Following approval, the new rates will likely be implemented on an interim basis in December 2026. Should there be any discrepancies between interim and final rates, the company has indicated that these will be subject to a refund.

Although Kentucky American Water's recent history has not involved frequent rate adjustments, the current landscape necessitates this proactive approach to maintain system resilience and deliver quality services to the public. Previous rate requests were made in May 2025, and the adjustments approved in December of that year set a backdrop for the current necessity. As part of its ongoing commitment to affordability, Kentucky American Water also provides several assistance programs for eligible customers, such as the H2O Help to Others program, flexible payment plans, and budget billing options. Details of these programs are accessible through the Customer Assistance Programs section on their website.
