Life Flight Network Expands into Hawai'i
The nation’s largest not-for-profit air ambulance provider,
Life Flight Network, is embarking on a major expansion into Hawai’i, announcing a remarkable
$27 million investment. This initiative aims to enhance air medical operations with the introduction of new services tailored specifically to meet the needs of the local communities.
Expansion Overview
Set to launch operations this fall, Life Flight Network's investment is set against the backdrop of a previously announced
$15 million investment from the Daniel R. Sayre Memorial Foundation. This significant funding boost will facilitate the acquisition of advanced medical equipment, three strategic bases on the Big Island, and a new
Airbus H145 helicopter specifically designed for rapid response and patient transport. This operational ramp-up is designed to significantly increase access to timely and high-quality emergency medical transportation, which is crucial for both residents and visitors in the islands.
Community-Focused Approach
Ben Clayton, CEO of Life Flight Network, emphasized the organization's commitment to community engagement during the planning phases. “We have invested time to listen to community leaders and healthcare partners across Hawai’i. Our mission is clear: to improve access to emergency medical services and save lives,” said Clayton.
The expansion has been met with enthusiasm from local officials, including Mayor Kimo Alameda of the Big Island, who highlighted the importance of enhanced emergency medical services. “Life Flight Network’s presence will fortify our emergency response capabilities, particularly in rural and remote areas where quick access to care is often challenging,” stated Mayor Alameda.
Local healthcare leaders echo this sentiment. Clayton McGhan, CEO of Hawai’i Health Systems' Hawai’i West Region, remarked on the vital need for timely emergency care in such areas. “Enhancing air medical transport capacity is critical for our community and this investment is a significant step forward,” he added.
Operational Details
In a collaborative effort with Queen's North Hawai'i Community Hospital and Kona Community Hospital, two air ambulances will be stationed at these facilities initially, transitioning to the state-of-the-art Airbus H145 helicopters by mid-2026. Another crucial component of this expansion includes a
Pilatus PC-12NG fixed-wing aircraft to be located at Hilo International Airport. These aircraft are expected to facilitate emergency transports between the hospitals and beyond to O’ahu, fortifying the overall emergency response network on the island.
In partnership with the Daniel R. Sayre Memorial Foundation, the Operations will also include the use of an Airbus H145D3 helicopter, further extending their capacity to serve those in critical need.
Dominic Pomponio, Chief Business Officer at Life Flight Network, described the partnership as a shared mission to enhance care accessibility. “This investment signifies our commitment not just in equipment and technology, but in recruiting skilled personnel ready to serve the community 24/7,” he stated.
Community Impact and Future Plans
The establishment of Life Flight Network's bases in Hilo, Kona, and Waimea intends to address the critical health care needs that are prominent in the Big Island. Stephany Nihipali Vaioleti, President of Queens North Hawai'i Community Hospital noted, “The quicker access to advanced care provided by Life Flight Network can make a life-saving difference for our critically ill and injured patients.”
