Promoting Cycling in National Park: Test Event at the Imperial Palace

Experience Sustainable Recreation at the Imperial Palace's Cycling Event

The Japan Bicycle Promotion Association, along with the Ministry of the Environment, is excited to announce a special cycling event scheduled for September 21 and 28, 2025, at the Imperial Palace's Outer Garden. This endeavor, titled 'Utilization Project of the Imperial Palace Outer Garden through Cycling', aims to promote the enjoyment of bicycles as a sustainable and healthy mode of transport.

What to Expect

During this event, participants will have access to a cycling course from Wakida Bridge to Hirakawa Gate, where they can enjoy the scenic beauty of the area. A tent will be set up for free rental bicycles, and there will be a simple bike-sharing port for those looking to explore further. For families with children who are unable to ride, we will offer a bicycle riding class for elementary school students and their guardians, alongside a traffic safety educational program for kids.

Free Bicycle Rental

After registering at the tent, attendees can take a free bicycle to cycle around the Palace Cycling course. Once completed, participants are encouraged to return their bike and fill out a questionnaire, receiving a 'free bike-share coupon' as a token of appreciation.

  • - Safety Notice: Helmets are mandatory, and participants will be provided with an inner lining for the helmet when borrowed.
  • - Rental Conditions: Bicycles are only permitted to be used within the designated cycling area. While children's bikes are available, quantities are limited.

Shared Bicycles

Participants can utilize bike-sharing services like 'Docomo Bike Share', 'Dai-Chari', and 'Chari-Chari'. Coupons provided can be used to venture outside the park boundaries for a broader exploration, and they can also be retained for future use.

  • - Smartphone Requirement: To utilize the bike-sharing service, visitors must have the respective application installed on their smartphones. Rental fees will apply if users exceed the coupon's validity period.

Bicycle Riding Lessons

Special classes will be available for elementary school children who cannot ride, aimed at teaching basic cycling skills to families. These lessons will be conducted irregularly during future Palace Cycling events. Details regarding registration and scheduling will be posted on our official website.

Priority registration will be given to residents and students of Chiyoda Ward for specific dates:
  • - September 21 - For local students and guardians.
  • - September 28 - Open to pre-registered individuals via our website.
  • - October 5 - A backup option in case of rain on the 21st, depending on availability. Non-residents may also apply if space remains.

To register for the events, participants must visit our website and provide key details about the child and guardian. Remember that registration is required, and participant limits will be observed.

Traffic Safety Education Class

The local police department will conduct traffic safety lessons aimed at educating children about safe riding practices. Families are encouraged to join this informative session designed to maximize safety during the cycling event.
