Revamping Hiroshima's 'Tourou Nagashi' with New Logo, Flyers, and Website

The 'Tourou Nagashi' festival in Hiroshima, a poignant remembrance ritual honoring the victims of the atomic bombing, received a refreshing new identity as part of a collaborative initiative between the Tourou Nagashi Executive Committee and Digital Hollywood STUDIO Hiroshima. The festival began in 1947 when families honored their deceased by releasing lanterns into the river, and through contemporary design efforts, the project seeks to communicate this historical legacy while reaching new audiences.

A Creative Collaboration

The project was launched in December 2025, spanning over eight months, and saw participation from current students and graduates from various Digital Hollywood STUDIO locations across Japan, along with members of the freelance initiative 'freelance BOOST session'. Participants engaged in competitions, conducted field surveys, and refined their ideas to create new visuals, including a logo, flyers, and a revamped website. The public debut of these designs coincided with the 81st anniversary of the bombing on August 6, 2026.

Logo Competition

The logo competition attracted 30 design proposals from students and alumni of Digital Hollywood STUDIO campuses nationwide. The final selection, combining a logo mark and a logotype, was adopted as the official emblem for the 'Tourou Nagashi' festival. The resulting design not only reflects the festival's narrative but is also adaptable for various promotional materials, making it a significant symbol for future communications.

Flyer and Web Redesign

The flyer competition received 8 entries, leading to awards for the best designs, with the winning flyers serving as postcards available for sale at the festival. The flyers were designed to clearly present event details and encourage participation, featuring a layout that resonates with audiences of all ages.

In parallel, a web competition involved 8 teams and 22 participants from the freelance BOOST session initiative. The top accolade was awarded to 'freelance BOOST session Team A', whose design focuses on user-friendly navigation and accessibility. The newly launched website showcases crucial information about the festival, ensuring that attendees can easily find their way to the event.

Feedback from the Jury

Jury members, including executives from the executive committee, expressed their admiration for how each proposal captured the essence of the 'Tourou Nagashi'. They noted the difficulty in choosing a winner, given the heartfelt representation of the event's atmosphere and significance across all submissions.

Looking Ahead

The aim of this project was not just to give the 'Tourou Nagashi' festival a new visual identity, but also to convey its profound meaning in an engaging manner. By modernizing the logo, flyers, and website, the initiative hopes to inspire long-time followers and newcomers alike, fostering a sense of connection and inviting greater participation in this vital cultural tradition. As the festival continues, efforts will be made to keep the spirit of Hiroshima's cherished events alive and vibrantly shared with future generations.
