National Black Leaders Launch EJI Initiative for Economic Justice and Digital Infrastructure Development

National Black Leaders Launch EJI Initiative

On October 29, 2026, a group of distinguished Black leaders and experts in business and public policy unveiled the Economic Justice and Infrastructure (EJI) initiative. This initiative aims to help local communities capitalize on the ongoing digital infrastructure revolution. By concentrating on strategic outreach in states such as Iowa, Indiana, Georgia, Ohio, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, and Texas, EJI seeks to empower these communities through economic opportunities arising from industrial transformation.

EJI is emerging at a crucial moment in history, characterized by advancements in artificial intelligence, the construction of data centers, modernizing the power grid, advanced manufacturing initiatives, and an increase in domestic energy production. As our nation experiences this new industrial revolution, it becomes essential to ensure that those who have traditionally been marginalized can partake in its benefits. Executive Director Ja'Ron Smith emphasized that misinformation and political discord often cloud this transformation, hindering some communities from seizing the historical opportunities presented.

Smith stated, "We are living in a new industrial revolution, prompted by artificial intelligence. This period is generating innovation, new job opportunities, and wage increases; however, these improvements are often overlooked amidst the chaos of misinformation." EJI will be acting as a coordinating entity that unites industries with local governments, stakeholders, and educational institutions, ensuring that the advantages of infrastructural advancements are widely and sustainably distributed.

For various players in the industry, including hyperscalers, technology developers, and utility providers, EJI provides a structured approach to managing readiness for infrastructure projects, aligning stakeholders' needs, developing the workforce, engaging with the community, and overcoming implementation challenges. Moreover, local enterprises, historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs), workforce organizations, and other educational institutions will benefit from pathways leading to greater participation in the economic opportunities linked to significant infrastructure investments.

Smith elaborated on EJI's vision: "We aim to create a coordinated, scalable operational framework that links infrastructure investment with economic participation and institutional capacity. Our objective is to generate tangible, measurable results for all parties involved."

The leadership that drives EJI encompasses numerous individuals with extensive experience in public policy and private sector initiatives. Ja'Ron Smith, known for his roles in the Trump White House, acts as EJI's executive director. The board consists of prominent figures including Michael Catanzaro and Jimmie Coleman, both boasting strong backgrounds in energy policy, minority business leadership, and artificial intelligence.

The work emerging from the EJI initiative highlights the need for a paradigm shift in how communities engage with rapid industrial transformations. As cities and towns across America seek to modernize and evolve, EJI aims to become a pivotal force ensuring that the benefits of technological advancement are equitably distributed, allowing for economic participation that strengthens local economies and enriches communities for future generations.
