The BioVault initiative, part of Colossal's distributed network, plans to collect, sequence, and preserve living cells, reproductive tissues, and genomic material from over 2,300 threatened and endangered species. If successful, this endeavor could become one of the most extensive biodiversity preservation ventures ever undertaken in the United States. The genomic data produced through this partnership will be made accessible to the global scientific community, which is crucial for future conservation, recovery, and restoration efforts.

Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum stated, "America leads the world when we embrace innovation and put our best minds to work solving big challenges. This collaboration merges the scientific expertise of the USFWS with private sector ingenuity to create tools that can help recover species and preserve vital genetic resources."

The partnership's primary objective is to establish a robust framework focused on preserving genetic diversity and enhancing scientific understanding of how genomic technologies can aid endangered species recovery. By exploring groundbreaking technologies, the initiative aims to contribute positively to the long-term sustainability of wildlife.

CEO and Co-Founder of Colossal Biosciences, Ben Lamm, emphasized the initiative's monumental scope. “Just as the Svalbard Global Seed Vault was created to safeguard the genetic diversity of our food supply, this partnership aims to protect the genetic diversity of life itself. Through this initiative, Colossal seeks to create an extensive living archive of Earth's biodiversity, dubbing it a modern-day Noah’s Ark constructed from DNA. Colossal Biosciences operates a state-of-the-art infrastructure dedicated to conservation biobanking and genomics.
