Hood College's Nutrition Program Achieves Accreditation by ACEND, Enhances Student Opportunities

Hood College's Nutrition Program Achieves ACEND Accreditation

Hood College recently celebrated a significant milestone as it announced that its Master’s of Science in Nutrition program has received accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND). This prestigious recognition, granted on October 20, provides an exciting opportunity for students pursuing careers in nutrition and dietetics, validating the quality and rigor of the program until its next review, set for June 30, 2033.

As the sole accrediting body for education programs geared toward future registered dietitian nutritionists and nutrition and dietetics technicians, ACEND’s accreditation signifies that Hood College meets the stringent national standards for education, hands-on learning experiences, and professional preparedness in the field of dietetics. This ensures that graduates will qualify to take the national Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) credentialing examination, a critical step in their career paths.

A Multi-Year Process of Evaluation

The pathway to accreditation for the 42-credit dietetics track involved a thorough multi-year evaluation process. This rigorous journey included comprehensive self-studies, assessment of curriculum effectiveness, and analysis of program outcomes. Additionally, ACEND evaluators conducted an on-site peer review, engaging with faculty, staff, students, preceptors, and community stakeholders, to assess the program’s strengths and innovations.

The ACEND review team highlighted the program's unique approaches to education, especially its use of simulation-based learning and strong ties with community partners. Such a framework equips students not only with theoretical knowledge but also with practical skills that are vital for addressing real-world challenges in nutrition.

Preparing Graduates for Diverse Careers in Nutrition

Joanna Eaton, the Program Director for Nutrition Science, emphasized the importance of this accreditation for the students. “Our graduates are ready to make an impact in various settings—be it hospitals, schools, or public health organizations,
