Urbana High School Students Gain Real-World Financial Skills at Reality Fair Hosted by Nymeo FCU

Empowering Students with Financial Literacy at Urbana High School

In an exciting initiative to enhance financial education, Nymeo Federal Credit Union recently hosted a Financial Reality Fair at Urbana High School in Frederick, Maryland. Supported by the school and Frederick County Public Schools, this event aimed to equip nearly 200 students with practical financial skills necessary for their futures.

The fair was designed as a hands-on experience where students could engage with real-life financial scenarios. This culminating event followed several classroom lessons on critical topics such as budgeting, debt management, and career exploration. Under the guidance of Career Coach Tonya Chubb, students learned not just about financial concepts but were encouraged to apply them in a simulated environment.

At the fair, students navigated through interactive booths covering various aspects of adult life, including housing, transportation, groceries, and insurance. By visiting these booths, students were introduced to the complexities of financial responsibilities, an important staple of adult living.

Vicki Johnston, President and CEO of Nymeo, highlighted the fair's importance, stating, "At Nymeo, we believe financial education should be practical, engaging, and introduced early. Reality Fairs create meaningful experiences that help students better understand budgeting, saving, and financial responsibility before entering adulthood. We are proud to partner with schools and educators to support financial literacy in our communities."

Moreover, to add an element of unpredictability to the simulation, students faced unexpected challenges labeled "Mayhem" scenarios. These incidents included surprise expenses and emergencies that true to life, tested the students' decision-making skills in critical financial situations.

One student aptly noted, "I liked the Mayhem cards that caused unexpected expenses because it showed how life can be unpredictable sometimes." Another student reflected, "The event helped me understand how financial decisions affect everyday life." This feedback underscores the event's success in making financial education relatable and applicable.

The seamless execution of the fair was a result of meticulous planning and collaboration among various stakeholders, including school authorities, educators, and community partners. Principal Donna Claubaugh and Assistant Principal Christopher Berry were instrumental in supporting this initiative from its inception, ensuring that all logistical aspects were proficiently handled.

In addition, student volunteers, particularly those from the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), played a crucial role in guiding their peers through the fair. Their involvement not only fostered leadership skills but also reinforced the collaborative spirit of the event.

The value of community support was evident, as local businesses such as Sheetz contributed to the fair, alongside donations from families and staff members. "Because of the dedication of our educators, volunteers, community partners, student ambassadors, and Nymeo, our students are one step closer to becoming real-world ready," said Chubb.

This event exemplified how collaborative efforts can yield significant educational outcomes, fostering a community of informed and financially literate individuals. As Nymeo Federal Credit Union continues its mission to empower its members with financial knowledge, events like these pave the way for a future generation that is not only prepared for financial challenges but also thrives in them.
