Exploring Sustainable Biomass Energy: Current Trends and Future Prospects at JFE Engineering Seminar

Understanding Sustainable Biomass Energy

On October 23, 2025, the Japan Planning Institute (JPI) is set to host a pivotal seminar led by Mr. Takahiro Uchiumi from JFE Engineering Co., Ltd. This event, titled "Exploring Sustainable Biomass Energy: Current Trends and Future Prospects," aims to discuss the growing complexities surrounding biomass energy production in Japan. The seminar will be held in person from 13:30 to 15:30, and participants will have the opportunity to attend via live broadcast and access an archive of the session.

Contextual Background

Since the introduction of the Feed-in Tariff (FIT) system for renewable energy in 2012, biomass energy has significantly advanced within the country. Yet, recent challenges, such as unstable fuel supply and soaring costs, have placed pressure on the long-term viability of these projects. Furthermore, issues related to the repurposing of facilities after the expiration of FIT incentives are becoming increasingly pronounced. Despite these challenges, the 7th Energy Basic Plan continues to recognize biomass power as a crucial renewable energy source, underscoring its potential importance in Japan's energy future.

Key Discussion Points

During the seminar, Mr. Uchiumi will cover a range of topics, beginning with a foundational understanding of biomass energy.

1. Fundamentals of Biomass Energy
- Types of woody biomass
- Methods of converting biomass into energy
- Overview of circulating fluidized bed technology

2. Current Situation and Challenges
- Technical issues facing biomass energy
- Operational challenges for businesses
- Environmental and social concerns associated with biomass production

3. Future Prospects for Sustainable Biomass Energy
- Qualitative aspects: utilization as a renewable resource
- Quantitative aspects: potential for achieving carbon negativity
- Presentation of creative case studies
- Considerations for post-FIT scenarios

4. Q&A Session
5. Networking Opportunities

The seminar aims to facilitate meaningful exchanges among attendees, including business card exchanges and discussions that can foster new connections and opportunities. This interactive segment will serve as a valuable networking opportunity, allowing participants to expand their professional circles and explore potential collaborations.
