Sofia University Library Joins Yamanote Line Private University Library Consortium

Sofia University Library Joins the Yamanote Line Private University Library Consortium

On February 26, 2026, a significant partnership was established when Sofia University’s library, located in Chiyoda, Tokyo, officially entered into a consortium with other private university libraries along the Yamanote Line. This agreement marks a pivotal moment in enhancing the convenience of research and study for students and faculty alike, allowing for improved collaboration and resource sharing across multiple institutions.

Beginning April 1, 2026, Sofia University Library will participate fully in this consortium, affording its members unprecedented access to a wealth of resources. Each member with a library card will enjoy the benefits of library entry, book loans, and access to a unified search service for materials held by all consortium libraries. This collaborative framework is set to elevate the academic experience and facilitate valuable exchanges between participating institutions.

About the Yamanote Line Private University Library Consortium

The Yamanote Line Private University Library Consortium originated in March 2000 when eight prestigious universities—Aoyama Gakuin University, Gakushuin University, Kokugakuin University, Toyo University, Hosei University, Meiji University, Meiji Gakuin University, and Rikkyo University—came together in agreement. With the inclusion of Senshu University in 2021, and now Sofia University, the consortium has grown to ten member universities.

This consortium was formed in response to the rapidly changing educational and research landscape which has necessitated innovative strategies in university libraries. In light of the limitations faced by individual libraries in enhancing services for their users, collaborative efforts became essential, leading to the establishment of this consortium. Together, member libraries have defined agreements that set forth cooperative guidelines, and they are actively working on the design and implementation of effective initiatives.

As the consortium celebrates its 27th anniversary, the opportunity to utilize diverse and distinctive collections held by member libraries continues to expand. The addition of Sofia University’s library is anticipated to further accelerate resource sharing and promote academic exchanges among scholars and students across the consortium.

Comment from Naomi Matsumoto, Director of Sofia University Library

Professor Naomi Matsumoto from the Faculty of Law, specializing in International Relations, expressed her enthusiasm about the membership: “We hope that our new membership will bring the unique collections and intellectual resources of private university libraries closer to our users. This will enhance opportunities for collaborative research and foster vibrant exchanges among students and researchers. By bolstering inter-library cooperation and enhancing cross-search capabilities, Sofia University Library aims to strengthen the foundation for learning and research. We are committed to promoting an open cycle of knowledge in partnership with our fellow consortium members while contributing to the improvement of higher education quality and the development of the academic community.”
