Costa Rica Showcases Investment Potential in Health and Semiconductor Sectors at Major German Trade Fairs
Costa Rica's Investment Promotion in Germany
The Costa Rican Trade and Investment Promotion Agency, known as PROCOMER, is set to take part in two major international trade fairs in Germany aimed at the health and semiconductor sectors. The events, namely COMPAMED and MEDICA, will be held from November 17 to 20 in Düsseldorf, followed by Semicon Europa from November 18 to 21 in Munich. This participation highlights Costa Rica's initiative to attract foreign direct investment (FDI) from leading companies in these innovative industries.
PROCOMER's delegation will engage in discussions with prospective investors, showcasing the country’s value proposition in these high-demand sectors. Laura Lopez, the Executive Director of PROCOMER, emphasized the significance of these fairs, stating that they open avenues for reaching out to new investors and exploring markets that have traditionally seen limited Costa Rican presence. This strategy is crucial for diversifying the investment base, thereby increasing the nation’s resilience and competitiveness, particularly in the critical area of medical devices and semiconductors.
Costa Rica's participation at COMPAMED and MEDICA aims to reinforce its status as a manufacturing hub for medical devices. Currently, the country hosts over 95 foreign direct investment companies in this sector, which develop high-precision processes that meet international standards. Additionally, it is home to seven of the world's largest medical technology firms. In September of this year, this sector accounted for 48% of Costa Rica's total goods exports, with a combined value of $8.139 billion.
At Semicon Europa, one of the key events for the semiconductor industry, Costa Rica will present its advancements in areas such as advanced manufacturing, assembly, packaging, research, and electronic design. The presence of 14 foreign investment companies in this emerging sector reflects its growing importance, underscoring the efforts to enhance the value chain linked to semiconductors in Costa Rica.
"Costa Rica has established a solid reputation as a destination for foreign direct investment, and we can now strategically position ourselves to emerging industries with a value proposition that combines talent, sustainability, and adaptability. These attributes make us a reliable partner for companies looking to enhance their competitiveness in an increasingly complex global environment," added Lopez.
Prior to these events, PROCOMER strengthened its promotional activities in Portugal and the Netherlands from November 10 to 14, 2025, introducing Costa Rica's advantages to companies in corporate services and digital technologies. This included participation in the Web Summit Lisbon 2025, one of the world's most prestigious technology events, alongside meetings with businesses, chambers, and clusters in Lisbon, Amsterdam, and Rotterdam, aimed at fostering new relationships and investment opportunities.
Europe continues to solidify its role as one of the most significant sources of foreign direct investment for Costa Rica, accounting for 21% in 2025, an increase of 17% from 2024, and becoming the country's second-largest trading partner. With such initiatives, Costa Rica positions itself as an attractive destination for foreign investments, particularly in the dynamic sectors of health and technology.
