Children's Music Cafeteria in Harajuku: A Symphony of Harmony

From July 24 to 26, 2026, Harajuku was transformed into a vibrant canvas of music and food as the Children's Music Cafeteria made its debut, organized by Silverbacks Principal Group. With the Pacific Philharmonia Tokyo providing special music programs, over 200 children were invited to engage in this unique experience at WITH HARAJUKU.

A Cultural Initiative for Children

The Children's Music Cafeteria aims to bridge the gap for children who have limited opportunities to experience cultural arts. This project, driven by the social welfare organization Support 21, is designed to deliver the beauty of music and the joy of dining to young audiences. A key message of the event was to impart the power of harmony that orchestras can manifest. Each musician plays a distinct part, yet together they create a unified piece of art. This illustrates how personal uniqueness contributes to collective value.

Throughout the three-day event, a total of 12 performances engaged the children in a captivating exploration of sound. The ambiance was lively with trumpet fanfares echoing from the second floor and percussionists making dramatic entrances via escalators. This immersive experience was not just about listening; it was about being part of the artistic journey.

Discovering 'Twinkle Twinkle Little Star'

The repertoire included famous orchestral pieces such as Bolero and Radetzky March, alongside an interactive introduction to instruments using Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star. Each instrument showcased its unique sound, initially unrecognizable in isolation. As the first violin introduced the melody, the children witnessed how each sound converged to create the beloved tune, emphasizing teamwork and collaboration in music.

Fifth grader Kariai expressed her amazement saying, “I couldn't figure out what the song was when it was played individually, but when we all played together, it transformed into something wonderful.” This sentiment was echoed by second grader Ryo, who found the blending sounds intriguing. Five-year-old Ryoma exclaimed joyfully, “I had so much fun seeing all the different instruments up close!” Their experiences highlight how they instinctively grasped the concept of harmony through variety.

Musicians Sharing the Joy

The musicians, including Yukiko Kenmochi, a violinist with the Pacific Philharmonia Tokyo, expressed the unique experience as well. “Usually, I play in large halls, but here, the children were right in front of us, creating music together in the same space. It felt entirely different,” she reflected. Kenmochi emphasized the distinct appeal of orchestras as they gather diverse musicians to form a cohesive musical experience. She added, “I hope the children not only hear the music but also feel it with all their senses through our breaths and eye contact.”

The initiative isn't just a one-off event. The Children's Music Cafeteria will continue to spread the joy and lessons of orchestral music and food, targeting schools, kindergartens, community centers, and commercial spaces for future events.
