Lincoln Avenue Communities Celebrates Groundbreaking of Affordable Housing in Fairfax County

On December 11, 2024, Lincoln Avenue Communities (LAC), a dedicated developer focused on affordable housing, celebrated the groundbreaking of the Residences at Government Center II in Fairfax County, Virginia. The event highlighted the community's commitment to providing high-quality, affordable housing options for families in the region. This development will offer 279 homes in the Braddock District, accompanied by a daycare center to serve residents and enhance their living experience.

The groundbreaking ceremony brought together influential figures, including U.S. Representative Gerry Connolly, who emphasized the significance of affordable housing during his remarks. Connolly, representing Virginia's 11th District, shared his excitement about the project, highlighting that creating and preserving affordable housing has been a lifelong commitment in both his congressional role and previous positions as Chair of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors.

"I am thrilled to be a part of this innovative use of land to further the creation of affordable housing in our community," stated Connolly.

Nick Bracco, Vice President of Lincoln Avenue Communities, expressed pride in commencing construction on this vital project. He noted the pressing need for nearly 300 affordable housing options in Fairfax County, stating, "Once completed, this property will offer nearly 300 affordable homes with top-tier amenities to families and individuals in Fairfax County, where new affordable housing is strongly needed."

Jeff McKay, Chairman of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, echoed these sentiments, underscoring the importance of ensuring equitable access to housing for all community members. "These new homes will ensure that more people have an equitable shot at building their own future, right here in Fairfax County," he articulated.

James Walkinshaw, the Braddock District Supervisor, shared his vision of utilizing the previously underused parking area near the Government Center for affordable housing, recognizing the evolution from concept to reality.

The project is also a collaboration with various local partners, including Virginia Housing, the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development, and the Fairfax County Redevelopment and Housing Authority (FCRHA). Capital One played a vital role, providing construction debt and equity investments to support this initiative. Ed Delany, Senior Director for Community Finance at Capital One, remarked on the importance of their partnership with LAC, emphasizing their shared commitment to expanding affordable housing across multiple locations.

The design of the Residences at Government Center II has been diligently crafted by KTGY architects, focused on creating a vibrant living environment that enhances the pedestrian experience. Director Patricia Mao Booker remarked, "Our architects carefully designed around the surrounding environment to enhance the pedestrian experience for this mixed-use affordable housing complex. We're proud to support low-income families in Fairfax with this new, beautifully designed community."
