Medical College of Wisconsin Celebrates Dedication of Michels Center for Cancer Discovery

Dedication of the Michels Center for Cancer Discovery

On October 12, 2026, the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) officially dedicated the Michels Center for Cancer Discovery, commemorating the generous $27 million donation by Tim and Barbara Michels and the Michels Family Foundation. This landmark gift aims to bolster research and personalized care in the field of cancer treatment, marking a significant step in advancing medical breakthroughs.

A Celebration of Generosity

The dedication event took place on MCW’s Milwaukee campus, bringing together members of the Michels family, cancer researchers, and clinicians. In his remarks, Tim Michels expressed pride in having their family’s name associated with innovative cancer discoveries at MCW. He highlighted the vital role that exceptional scientists and advanced resources play in achieving breakthroughs in cancer research.

“While we don’t know where exactly the next cancer research breakthrough will come from, we do know it takes exceptional scientists with access to state-of-the-art resources to find it,” said Michels. “We believe in the cancer researchers here and want to help accelerate their relentless pursuit of more answers, more treatments, and more hope for patients and their families.”

The Vision for the Future

Dr. Shekar N. Kurpad, MCW's president and CEO, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the transformative impact of the Michels family’s contribution.

“The Michels family shares our belief that a brighter future for cancer patients and their families is within reach,” Kurpad stated. “Their generosity gives us the courage and the means to pursue that future with even greater ambition and with a focus on precision medicine.”

The Michels Center, a state-of-the-art 161,000-square-foot facility, is dedicated exclusively to cancer research and is home to over 300 scientists and support staff. This facility will serve as a cornerstone for MCW's initiatives in translating research findings into better patient care and innovative treatments.

A Lasting Legacy

The Michels family’s support not only enhances MCW's research capabilities but also serves as a lasting tribute to the potential for progress in the fight against cancer. The center aims to bridge the gap between laboratory advances and clinical applications, bringing hope to patients and their families facing cancer.

As MCW continues to break new ground in cancer research, the dedication of the Michels Center for Cancer Discovery stands as a promising beacon of hope, underscoring the importance of philanthropy in medical advancements. The MCW community is profoundly grateful for the enduring legacy created by the Michels family, which is set to shape the future of cancer research and treatment in Wisconsin and beyond.
