APP Japan Hosts Indonesian Internship Program for Students Focused on Sustainable Development Goals

APP Japan's Exciting Internship Program in Indonesia

In a significant initiative aimed at enhancing global learning, APP Japan has collaborated with Tsukuba University and other educational institutions to conduct an internship program in Indonesia, focused on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This program provides students with hands-on experience in the field of sustainable forestry management, illustrating the efforts of businesses in achieving environmentally friendly practices.

A Project Rooted in Global Human Resource Development

Started in 2015, the Indonesian fieldwork program is organized primarily by Tsukuba University’s Sakado High School. This program has successfully completed its sixth iteration, showcasing the commitment of Japanese educational institutions to nurture globally minded individuals. Since 2023, students and faculty from Tsukuba University and Ehime University have joined, enriching the collaborative experience.

Engaging Learning Journey

The internship, which took place from July 27 to August 8, 2025, offered a structured visit to various key locations including APP's headquarters in Jakarta, as well as the Indah Kiat Perawang mill and surrounding forest management areas in Riau Province. Students explored Indonesia’s sustainable forestry management practices and the paper production process, gaining invaluable insights into how environmental considerations are integrated into the industry.

In addition, participants engaged in the 'Forest Restoration Project – Let's Work Together for SDGs!', funded partially by donations from the sales of paper products in Japan. This included hands-on activities such as planting trees, fostering a sense of responsibility towards environmental conservation.

Student Reflections

Participants expressed profound realizations about the paper industry and its intricate connection to global supply chains. One student noted, “I learned that paper is like a smartphone in that it results from the collective work of various individuals, which made me question its affordability.” Another shared, “I discovered that businesses must ensure their profit does not lead to others' disadvantage, striving to make all stakeholders, including local communities, beneficiaries.” These reflections underscore the program's success in fostering critical thinking and awareness among young individuals.

Acknowledgments and Future Directions

The feedback from students confirmed the program's effectiveness in broadening their understanding of sustainability and global interdependence. The partnership between APP Japan and educational institutions is poised for continued growth, further bridging the gap between environmental initiatives and educational practices.

Through programs like these, APP Japan not only contributes to SDGs but also plays a crucial role in shaping the next generation of environmentally conscious leaders. Overall, the internship has left a lasting impact on participants and paved the way for future collaborations in education and sustainability.
