Overview of the Winter Program at CTIS
This winter, from December 24 to 26, 2025, the Capital Tokyo International School (CTIS) is launching a unique urban development Project-Based Learning (PBL) program tailored for middle school students. Collaborating with Takusho Development Co., Ltd., a key player in community building based in Chiba City, this initiative promises to immerse students in the exciting field of urban planning through hands-on experience and teamwork.
The Project's Theme
During this three-day event, students will tackle the challenge of designing a festival in Chiba Park in collaboration with local businesses. They will work under the guidance of Takusho Development, aiming to create vibrant community engagement through their festival ideas. On the final day, students will present their unique proposals in English to an audience that includes Takusho Development employees, who will offer constructive feedback.
About CTIS Project-Based Learning Program
CTIS emphasizes learning through collaboration with industry professionals and experts. This approach allows students to develop essential knowledge and skills required to thrive in modern society. By tackling real-world challenges, students will engage in research, discussions, planning, and presentations, gaining invaluable insights from external specialists. This initiative is not limited to enrolled students; it opens doors for external candidates during long holiday periods, enriching their academic experiences.
Detailed Overview of the Urban Development PBL
The program is centered around the question, "What is urban development, and why does it matter?" Students will study the urban planning project conceptualized by Takusho Development, a local real estate developer, allowing them to understand their community better. They will conduct individual research, examining Chiba Park and its surrounding area, including local shops, demographics, and potential festival opportunities.
In addition, students will connect with local establishments such as Takusho Development’s retail complex, "the RECORDS", and playful venues like the "Tsubaki Muro Komuna" treehouse café. This not only fosters learning but also strengthens their ties with beloved community hotspots.
Steps in the Exploratory Learning Process
- - Determine festival targets, concepts, and partners
- - Specify project details and sale strategies
- - Engage in group discussions to refine ideas
- - Create compelling presentation boards to showcase their proposals
