IREX Announces New Leadership
On September 2, 2025, the Board of IREX officially appointed Aleksander Dardeli as the organization’s new President and CEO, effective immediately. Dardeli, who is affectionately known as Alekse, brings with him a bold vision and strategic acumen that are essential for navigating the landscape of international development today.
Dardeli is no stranger to IREX, having previously served as the Executive Vice President, where he spearheaded the organization’s global expansion and innovation initiatives. His tenure at IREX saw considerable advancements in operational strategies, as well as successful oversight of the acquisition of the Development Gateway, an organization with complementary goals.
A Proven Leader with Global Vision
Before returning to IREX, Dardeli served as the Chief Operating Officer at Save the Children. In this role, he was responsible for overseeing strategic planning and transformational initiatives to enhance the organization’s performance. His rich background in international development spans over 25 years, during which he held leadership positions in several prestigious entities, including IBI International and DynCorp International.
David A. Gross, Chair of the Board, expressed the board's enthusiasm for Dardeli's return, stating, "We are thrilled to welcome Aleks back to IREX. His experience and insight are perfectly suited to lead our organization in this changing environment. Aleks understands how to build strong partnerships and navigate complex situations, and we trust in his ability to drive IREX forward."
A Renewed Energy and Focus
Kate Thompson, the interim CEO, echoed these sentiments, adding, “Aleks’s return injects new energy into our organization, which is backed by committed programs and a passionate team of exceptionally talented professionals. We look forward to embarking on this new chapter under his guidance.”
Dardeli's global experience includes a significant initiative in Kosovo, where he worked with government institutions in preparation for independence. His comprehensive expertise encompasses the empowerment of youth and strengthening institutions across emerging economies and post-conflict areas. As a former Fulbright Scholar, he holds an outstanding academic record, with a degree from the University of Tirana and both a master’s degree from Columbia University and a J.D. from The Catholic University of America.
Commitment to Transformation and Growth
"IREX has a rich tradition of transforming educational systems and fostering collaboration to address pressing issues while supporting leaders across different sectors," Dardeli remarked. "I am excited to work alongside our staff, board, and supporters worldwide to broaden opportunities, create innovative solutions, and ultimately achieve lasting outcomes for America and the communities we serve."
