Okayama University Teams Up with High School for AI Seminar

Okayama University and AI: Empowering Future Generations

On June 14, 2025, Okayama University, a national university located in Okayama City, collaborated with Okayama Gakugeikan High School to conduct a seminar aimed at enhancing digital skills for high school students. This seminar was part of the school's "DX High-School Acceleration Project" initiative, focused on integrating information technology into educational practices.

The seminar was organized by six undergraduate and graduate students from the Data Science Department (DS) of Okayama University. Emphasizing interdisciplinary learning through ICT, the seminar was designed to broaden students’ understanding of generative AI, a vital tool in today’s digital landscape. The theme, "Dialogue with Your Future Self," encouraged students to connect their present studies with future aspirations.

Okayama Gakugeikan High School is one of the 20 schools nationwide recognized under the “Global Type” DX High-School category by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. The seminar involved 113 second-year students currently enrolled in an Information II course, aiming to equip them with essential knowledge on how to effectively utilize generative AI.

During the session, students learned about the fundamental principles of generative AI, the importance of safeguarding personal and confidential information, and the necessity of fact-checking. The seminar included practical guidance on crafting prompts and explored various applications of generative AI, leading to an interactive group activity where students created surveys to investigate the relationship between breakfast and concentration.

One student raised an insightful question about the considerations needed for humans to effectively utilize advanced generative AI technologies. This prompted a lively discussion that extended beyond the planned two and a half hours, allowing students and university mentors to engage deeply with the content, reflecting on their learning and future careers.

Kenji Ogasawara, the vice principal of Okayama Gakugeikan High School, encouraged the students to look up to the university students as role models for inspiration. Shunichi Ebihara, a teacher responsible for the information course, noted that the university students provided a level of understanding that might have surpassed traditional teaching methods, ensuring that students grasped the practical applications of what they were learning.

Looking ahead, Okayama Gakugeikan High School plans to continue its efforts by offering hands-on workshops on 3D printing, smartphone disassembly, and sessions for students to explore potential career paths. Ongoing discussions will take place regarding the pre-early enrollment in university lectures recommended for schools designated as “Global Type.”

Numerous requests for support from high schools within and outside the prefecture for DX High-School initiatives have been received. Okayama University remains committed to addressing the needs of faculty and students, enhancing the educational experience while contributing to the growth of its students and faculty awareness.

The university's support program is anticipated to play a crucial role in helping high school students navigate their futures more effectively while instilling a greater appreciation for academic pursuits in data science and technology. As the collaboration between Okayama University, the DS Department, and Okayama Gakugeikan High School continues to evolve, the collective expectation for multi-faceted growth greatens.

Conclusion

As we look to the future, initiatives like the one conducted by Okayama University and Okayama Gakugeikan High School exemplify the educational advancements that are crucial in today’s technology-driven world. By fostering partnerships and engaging students in meaningful dialogues, both institutions contribute significantly to the cultivation of capable and informed citizens ready to tackle the challenges of tomorrow.
