Exploring the 2025 Carbon Credit Market: Insights and Webinar Invitation

An In-depth Look at the 2025 Carbon Credit Market

In May 2023, Exroad Inc., a company that provides comprehensive information services related to carbon credits and emissions trading systems, in collaboration with the Carbon Credit Market Development Office of the Tokyo Stock Exchange, released a significant report titled Carbon Credit Market Survey Report. Spanning from March 10 to April 11, 2025, the survey garnered responses from 283 companies and organizations, totaling 362 responses, highlighting various aspects of the carbon credit market in Japan.

The Purpose of the Survey

The main objective of the survey was to analyze the supply and demand dynamics of the carbon credit market, the realities of price formation, and the challenges faced within the industry. By shedding light on the needs and issues faced by both consumers and producers in this market, the survey aims to enhance market predictability and provide insights for more vibrant transactions and policy developments in the future.

Key Findings from the Survey

Popularity of J-Credits

According to the survey, 84% of respondents are either currently purchasing or considering purchasing J-Credits, making it the most popular choice. Following J-Credits, 36% are interested in JCM (Joint Crediting Mechanism), and even 13% of participants expressed interest in carbon credits related to Article 6(4) of the Paris Agreement, which shows a growing curiosity in this area despite limited current circulation in the market.

External Demand in GX-ETS Phase Two

The survey indicated that in the second phase of the GX-ETS (Green Transformation Emissions Trading System), the necessary amount of credits to be purchased externally is expected to exceed at least 2.87 million tons annually. This underscores the escalating demand for carbon credits as companies seek to comply with stringent emission reduction targets.

Price Projections

Regarding anticipated prices for emissions trading under GX-ETS, 23% of respondents believe that by 2027, the trading price will range between 4,001 to 6,000 yen per ton CO2e. By 2030, 36% predict prices to surpass 6,001 yen, indicating a general consensus that trading prices are expected to rise in the coming years.

It is important to note that these results are based on voluntary responses, and the distribution of respondent attributes may not strictly represent the entire market. Readers should keep this in mind when interpreting the results.
