Artistic Transformation at Fairmont Tokyo
In a groundbreaking initiative, Japanese artist
Shunyo has installed a remarkable collection of
211 artworks throughout
Fairmont Tokyo, including individual pieces created for guest rooms and public spaces. Drawing inspiration from traditional Japanese culture, Shunyo emphasizes the spiritual essence of calligraphy, inviting guests into a world where art and space blend seamlessly.
Conceptual Foundation
The overarching theme of Shunyo's work revolves around the concept of the
power of writing, particularly Japanese calligraphy. This ancient practice is not just a means of communication but a form of prayer and expression. By integrating elements of
natural materials and traditional techniques, Shunyo aims to purify the space around visitors, wrapping them in an embrace of spiritual energy.
Art in Guest Rooms
One of the standout features of the hotel is the
Guest Room Art, particularly in the
Standard and Gold Rooms.
- - Wind: This piece, created as a lithograph using lacquer and mica, is embellished with pigments of gofun, gold, and silver. Representing the harmonious existence of nature and urban life in Shibaura, it captures the essence of the present moment, allowing the wind to permeate the space and subtly envelop guests in a sacred prayer during their stay. The artwork's appearance shifts with the play of natural light and angles, resulting in a unique experience for each individual.
- - Flower: In deluxe rooms, alongside the “Wind” installation, the “Flower” artwork draws from Japan's cultural tradition of welcoming guests with floral arrangements. This piece uses washi paper with oil smoke ink and silver to breathe life into the artwork, embodying the principles of welcoming and farewelling within the special environment of the hotel.
Public Space Artwork
Adjacent to the spa and pool areas, the piece titled
Connecting Water resonates with the concept of
BLUE FRONT SHIBAURA. This artwork symbolizes the memories of water flowing through Shibaura and its connection to the future. A collage of
Tama region kozo and
mitsumata handmade paper, alongside
Mino washi (recognized as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage), features characters depicting “water” written with Suzuka ink and highlighted with silver leaf. This installation serves as a testament to the bond between
people, places, and time, manifesting the natural cycles and human connections within an ever-evolving urban landscape.
Artist's Reflection
Shunyo expressed gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to Fairmont Hotels, a venue known for sparking creativity that has influenced global change, from John and Yoko’s bed-ins for peace to Monet’s paintings. He hopes that the guests of Fairmont Tokyo will remember their stay as a cherished memory, deeply intertwined with the power and beauty of art.
