An Insight into the Art of Kyosai Kawanabe

From June 13 to June 28, 2026, the Kawanabe Kyosai exhibition titled "Kishu Zaburo Collection: The World of Kyosai" will be held at Kashima Art in Tokyo's Kyobashi district. This exceptional exhibition will explore the career of the masterful painter and ukiyo-e artist Kyosai Kawanabe, who thrived during the tumultuous Bakumatsu and Meiji periods.

The exhibition will feature an impressive 65 works, marking their debut in Tokyo, selected from a comprehensive collection gathered over many years by Mr. Noboru Fujita, a prominent collector and researcher of Kyosai. This collection, named in honor of Kyosai's childhood name, takes center stage in the exhibition, showcasing both shun-ga (erotic prints) and various genres in ukiyo-e art.

Initially, the Kashima Art gallery organized this exhibition to further promote the appreciation of Japanese art. Admission is free, and there will be no artwork for sale, allowing visitors to immerse themselves fully in the experience.

The Life and Work of Kyosai Kawanabe

Kyosai Kawanabe (1831–1889), often referred to as the "Demon Painter," was mentored by the ukiyo-e master Utagawa Kuniyoshi in his youth and honed his skills at the Surugadai Kano school until he was 19. Drawing influences from various styles throughout his life, his unique approach led to a dynamic body of work that captured the essence of everyday life, beliefs, and entertainment during a period of societal transformation.

Kyosai's artworks cover a vast range of themes, including humor, nature, and satirical takes on contemporary society. The exhibition will present these themes across 14 curated sections, highlighting the depth and variety of his expression.
