Alkegen Launches Large-Scale Production of Fire-Resistant Aerogels for EV Batteries

Alkegen Unveils Large-Scale Production of Aerogels for EV Battery Fire Safety

Alkegen, a leading global provider of cell separators, has made a significant stride in the electric vehicle (EV) industry by announcing the large-scale commercial production of its fiber-enhanced aerogel insulation, designed specifically for fire protection in EV batteries. This strategic expansion not only broadens Alkegen's product portfolio but also provides original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) with a comprehensive suite of advanced thermal and electrical insulation materials for the rapidly evolving EV market.

In this new venture, Alkegen is introducing AlkeGel™, its high-performance fiber and aerogel composite. This innovative material addresses the increasing demand from automakers for ultra-thin, safe, and easy-to-install thermal protection solutions for lithium-ion battery systems. AlkeGel™ stands out from traditional aerogels by featuring a low powder content, which removes the necessity for complete encapsulation. This advancement enables simpler and more cost-effective designs to be incorporated seamlessly into battery packs, especially where space is a constraint.

John Dandolph, CEO of Alkegen, emphasized the importance of this launch saying, "We have taken a platform that has proven its effectiveness in the industrial sector and adapted it for one of the fastest-growing markets in the world—EV battery safety. Automakers no longer have to rely solely on a single supplier in North America for this mission-critical solution."

One of the key benefits of AlkeGel™ is its significantly reduced dustiness compared to traditional aerogel insulations. Chad Cannan, Chief Technology Officer at Alkegen, explained, "Automakers need reliable and scalable partners. With AlkeGel™, they now have a superior option. This material is easier to convert, safer to handle, and more adaptable to complex part geometries."

By introducing aerogels into its product line, Alkegen reinforces its leadership in cell separator technology, offering a full range of insulations that include thermal wraps and barriers. This comprehensive suite provides EV manufacturers with the flexibility to tailor the material to their specific applications.

Marty Melhorn, President of Battery Pack and Advanced Mobility, noted that the EV industry has been anticipating a credible second source of fire-protective aerogel insulation for batteries in North America. "AlkeGel™ is already here. We are manufacturing at scale, and this is just the beginning," he added.
