Japan's Innovative Sunny Day Discount Program Expands Nationwide

The Expansion of 'Harewari': Making Electricity More Affordable on Sunny Days

In an exciting development for energy consumers across Japan, the innovative program known as 'Harewari' is set to expand significantly in its second phase. Managed by the Japan Weather Association, 'Harewari' utilizes data from the weather forecasting service tenki.jp to offer discounts on electricity generated on sunny days, effectively encouraging the use of renewable energy while helping to reduce electricity costs for residents.

The initial phase, which kicked off in July 2023, saw over 14,812 participants, and an impressive 90% of surveyed customers expressed their desire to participate in future initiatives. In response, the latest phase will not only extend the program's geographical reach from just the Tokyo Electric Power Company area to encompass the entire nation (excluding Okinawa), but also broaden the time frame to all sunny days in December rather than focusing on a single day.

New Benefits and Features

The program will be highlighted by a special event during the busy holiday season. If a total of 10,000 taps on the 'Sunny Activity Button' are recorded via the Looop electric application by December 18, participants will enjoy increased discounts on specific days, with reductions rising to 4 yen per kWh.

Participants can take advantage of the 'Harewari' program by simply having a contract for Looop's 'Smart Time ONE' electricity plan, with discounts applying from December 1 to December 31 during designated sunny hours as predicted by tenki.jp.

Encouraging Renewable Energy

Mizuho Nakayama, the project manager of Looop's 'Harewari', emphasized the program's goal: "We want to effectively utilize solar power that is often wasted. The feedback from our first round has encouraged us to enhance the offer in our second phase. We're excited to create a festive atmosphere during Christmas and New Year stressful cleaning days while being environmental stewards."

In the original phase of 'Harewari', the results were promising. The program not only provided monetary savings on electricity bills but also elevated customers’ consciousness regarding energy usage timing, thus contributing to environmental conservation efforts. Comments from attendees reflected appreciation for both the savings and the knowledge gained about energy consumption patterns.

How to Participate

From November 21 to November 30, eligible customers can apply through the Looop electric app. This easy access to discounts on sunny days highlights a shift to more conscious energy usage, especially during peak demand periods.

This innovative initiative demonstrates a cooperative effort between consumers and companies to maximize the use of renewable energy resources while fostering a stronger culture of sustainability. As consumers become more aware of their energy consumption habits, programs like 'Harewari' pave the way for a greener, more financially viable energy future for everyone.
