California Black Women's Collective Launches Leadership Institute for Empowering Young Black Women
Empowering Young Black Women: The Launch of the Holly J. Mitchell Girls Empowerment Leadership Institute
The California Black Women’s Collective Empowerment Institute (CABWCEI) in collaboration with Mount Saint Mary's University Los Angeles (MSMU) has unveiled an exciting new initiative: the Holly J. Mitchell Girls Empowerment Leadership Institute. This innovative program is designed to foster leadership skills among young Black girls and prepare them for future success.
A Vision for Empowerment
Kellie Todd Griffin, President and CEO of CABWCEI, is passionate about this new venture. She states that their mission surpasses the boundaries of a mere program; it’s a transformative movement aimed at enabling Black girls to recognize their inherent brilliance, leadership potential, and power. The Institute's goal is to curate an environment where Black girls can thrive and are inspired to become change-makers in their communities.
Reflecting on her commitment to empowering young people, Los Angeles County Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell expressed her support for this initiative. She emphasized the urgent need to address the disparities affecting Black girls and women. With the launch of this program, she believes there is a real opportunity to alter the trajectory of their futures by investing in their growth, which ultimately benefits society at large.
Program Structure and Curriculum
The Holly J. Mitchell Girls Empowerment Leadership Institute will span seven months and will take place at MSMU's scenic Doheny Campus. The curriculum is tailored for middle and high school girls, with a special focus on those from underserved backgrounds. Participants will engage in monthly sessions that blend leadership training, entrepreneurship skills, civic engagement, and college readiness.
One of the unique aspects of the program is the mentorship network it offers. Participants will have the opportunity to learn directly from accomplished Black women leaders, assimilating invaluable knowledge and insights that can help them navigate their academic and professional journeys. This holistic approach not only equips them with essential skills but also fosters their confidence and broadens their networks.
Dr. Ann McElaney-Johnson, President of Mount Saint Mary’s, underscored the significance of this partnership and the shared vision behind the Institute. She articulated a strong belief in the power of education and mentorship to change lives, stating that the initiative is committed to inspiring future leaders with purpose and impact.
Application Process
The application window for the inaugural cohort is now open. While there is a nominal application fee, the program will be tuition-free for selected participants. Interested candidates are encouraged to visit the CABWCEI website for more information and to submit their applications.
Dr. Krishuana Hines-Gaither added her perspective, noting that the institute offers experiences she wishes she had during her youth. Within the cohort model, girls will refine their leadership qualities while receiving guidance from esteemed facilitators, further exemplifying the university's deep-rooted commitment to leadership development.
About the Organizations
CABWCEI stands as a nonprofit organization devoted to championing the social, political, and economic empowerment of Black women and girls throughout California. By engaging in research and advocacy, CABWCEI aims to dismantle the systemic barriers that obstruct the success of Black women at all levels.
Conversely, MSMU holds the distinction of being the sole women's university in Los Angeles and is recognized for its commitment to diversity and equity. The institution prioritizes programs that advance issues critical to women and girls and has established a reputation for fostering community service and engagement.
In conclusion, the Holly J. Mitchell Girls Empowerment Leadership Institute represents a significant step towards uplifting young Black women and preparing them to lead with confidence and purpose. This initiative not only nurtures individual potential but also contributes to the broader narrative of empowerment within communities, ensuring a brighter future for generations to come.
