A Decade of Impact: Seibo NPO's School Meal Program in Malawi
On February 11, 2025, Seibo NPO, a non-profit organization based in Tokyo, Japan, will proudly celebrate ten years of its school meal support program in Malawi, a southeastern African nation. This impactful initiative began in the Chiradzulu district near Blantyre and has grown to provide meals to around 20,000 children daily, starting from humble beginnings in kindergartens.
The Transformative Power of School Meals
In Malawi, many children struggle to attend school consistently due to poverty and food insecurity. Seibo's school meal program has emerged as a beacon of hope, providing much-needed nourishment and stability. The program not only addresses hunger but has also instigated significant positive changes:
- - Increased Attendance Rates: Providing meals has encouraged more children to attend school regularly.
- - Improved Focus in Class: With full stomachs, children can concentrate better in their studies.
- - Community Development: The program fosters growth within surrounding communities as families are motivated to engage with educational initiatives.
These meals symbolize more than just food; they lay a crucial foundation for children's learning and future prospects.

Educating Japanese Youth about Malawi
In addition to its school meal program, Seibo actively engages in educational initiatives within Japan. The organization conducts workshops and classes designed for middle and high school students, as well as university attendees, to learn about Malawi's situation. These activities encourage young people to consider how they can contribute to society through social business and community engagement.
The tenth anniversary not only celebrates the results of support but also a decade of nurturing mutual understanding between Japan and Malawi.
An example of this exchange can be seen in a recent social business class at Iwakura High School in Tokyo, where students interacted with staff from Malawi, gaining firsthand insights.
