Exploring the Legacy of Tetsuya Mogi: A Former President of the Japanese Institute of Certified Public Accountants

A Deep Dive into Tetsuya Mogi's Journey in the Accounting World

In July 2025, Tetsuya Mogi stepped down from his position as the president of the Japanese Institute of Certified Public Accountants, marking the end of an influential tenure. The latest edition of Accountant’s Magazine, released by Jusnet Communications, features an in-depth interview with Mogi, highlighting not only his career but also his impact on the accounting profession in Japan.

Born into a family operating a large workshop in Higashi-Nippori, Tokyo, Mogi’s path to becoming a certified accountant began during his studies at Keio University, where his fascination with accounting led him to pursue this rigorous profession. He joined the auditing firm, Ota Showa (now known as EY ShinNihon LLC), where he became part of a major bank’s auditing team. This experience not only broadened his understanding of finance but also culminated in the publication of a co-authored book on financial products, further solidifying his expertise in the field.

Mogi’s professional journey included numerous overseas assignments, enriching his knowledge and understanding of international accounting practices. His first involvement with the Japanese Institute of Certified Public Accountants was in 1999, as a specialist committee member of the Accounting Standards Committee, where he contributed to developing practical guidelines in accordance with financial product accounting standards set by the government.

His steadfast dedication to the Institute led him to become a director in 2013, but his career faced unexpected turmoil in 2015 when the Toshiba accounting scandal surfaced, resulting in his immediate recall to the Ota Showa auditing firm for restructuring purposes. With the corporate environment stabilized by July 2019, Mogi resumed his journey within the Institute and ascended to presidency in July 2022.

In his position, Mogi has emphasized the importance of enhancing societal understanding of accounting through education. He elaborated on his vision, stating, “What I wanted most as president was to deepen society’s understanding of accounting, particularly through educational initiatives. A heightened respect for the profession of certified accountants would empower younger generations to pursue their work with more confidence.” His commitment to fostering a supportive environment for aspiring accountants and instilling respect for the profession remains central to his legacy.

Mogi's future messages to the accounting community resonate with encouragement and aspiration. He aims to inspire new accountants to embrace their roles, equipped with the knowledge and respect that the profession deserves. His insights and reflections offer valuable lessons for those navigating the evolving landscape of accounting.

In addition to Mogi’s interview, this issue of Accountant’s Magazine presents various engaging content, including interviews with corporate finance departments, highlights on rising stars within auditing firms, and deep dives into the changing dynamics in the accounting industry. Each piece aims to equip professionals and aspiring accountants alike with knowledge and inspiration in their careers.

This quarterly publication primarily targets accounting professionals, corporate executives, CFOs, and successful candidates in the field. With a circulation of 11,000 copies, Accountant’s Magazine continues to be an essential resource in Japan’s accounting community, fostering communication, education, and professional growth.
