Understanding Hikikomori: Insights from the National Caravan Kickoff in Osaka

On August 22, 2023, the "Hikikomori VOICE STATION National Caravan 2026" commenced at the Gran Green Osaka. This initiative, organized by the Pal System Union and supported by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, aims to raise awareness about the issue of social withdrawal. The event attracted 210 participants both in person and online, featuring prominent speakers including director Akihito Miyamoto, comedian Louis Yamada, and influencer Maikichi.

A Journey Through Six Cities

The caravan, which started in 2022, has visited 28 cities thus far. This year, it will tour six cities, beginning with Osaka, and subsequently visiting Aomori, Yamanashi, Gifu, Okayama, and Miyazaki. The project aims to amplify diverse voices from those experiencing hikikomori and their families. Together, Miyamoto, Yamada, and Maikichi formed the “Hikikomori VOICE STATION Friends” to facilitate meaningful discussions across these cities.

Personal Experiences Shared

During the first session in Osaka, the three speakers shared their journeys in confronting social withdrawal. Yamada talked about his experiences of extreme pressure stemming from a successful academic career that led to a six-year period of isolation. After witnessing peers moving forward with life during a televised Coming-of-Age ceremony, he found the motivation to step outside. Small, incremental steps led him to finally push through his fears and reconnect with the world.

Maikichi shared how a cultural clash after transferring to a Japanese public school made him feel isolated, despite his academic success. The pandemic exacerbated his feelings, resulting in significant mental health challenges. A critical exchange with his mother prompted him to reevaluate his situation, leading to a deeper understanding and reconciliation with his family.

Miyamoto discussed his passion for arts from a young age but grappled with his innermost feelings, masking his true self during formative years. After a particularly tumultuous phase in high school, which culminated in him seeking psychiatric care, he chose a career path that involves collaboration and creativity, while still facing everyday anxieties.

Creative Expressions of Hikikomori

A poignant highlight of the session was the introduction of the “Hikikomori Voice Senryu,” a collection of haiku aimed at articulating the complexities of this experience. Participants were encouraged to express their feelings through poetry as a means of sparking dialogue about hikikomori. Each speaker shared their contributions, emphasizing the universal nature of their struggles and the importance of community support.

Healing Through Connection

In the second session, expert psychologist Mitsuhiro Iwata emphasized the theme of “healing through relaxed interactions.” He cited the metaphor of “henya-kan,” which denotes a feeling of comfort in imperfection, encouraging participants to embrace vulnerability without the pressure for perfection.

Various supportive perspectives were shared, with participants discussing how connection and communication can foster a supportive environment for those struggling. Understanding each other’s experiences can create a sense of safety and belonging, which is crucial for people grappling with isolation.

Upcoming Sessions

The caravan will continue to offer these sessions across the remaining five cities, focusing on dialogue and healing events that encourage participants to share their feelings and insights openly. Each session will promote understanding of the hikikomori experience and encourage participants to connect with one another in supportive ways.

Conclusion

As the Hikikomori VOICE STATION National Caravan progresses through its cities, it seeks not only to share individual stories but also to encourage a broader understanding of hikikomori. The aim is to cultivate an empathetic social environment that recognizes the diverse experiences and struggles faced by those dealing with social withdrawal.
