Beko Expands Its Second-Life Initiative Across Europe



Beko, a prominent player in the home appliance sector, has taken a major step forward in enhancing its refurbishment strategy. The company has unveiled the scaled implementation of its Reduce–Refurbish–Recycle program, an initiative that transforms returned appliances into high-quality, second-life products at a factory level. This advancement not only reduces waste and costs but also broadens access to essential home appliances for numerous households, all while maintaining safety and performance standards.

Fatih Özkadı, Beko's Chief Sustainability, Quality, and Customer Care Officer, emphasized the importance of refurbishment in extending the lifecycle of appliances, reducing waste, and offering consumers affordable, yet reliable products. "Refurbishment is about more than just repairing appliances—it’s about creating a sustainable value chain that benefits both our customers and the environment," he stated.

Beko’s investment in advanced refurbishment centers across Europe marks a significant evolution in the company's approach. In 2024 alone, over 114,000 appliances were refurbished globally through dedicated centers located in the UK, Italy, and Romania. By localizing access to refurbished products via outlet shops and partnerships, Beko ensures that customers can acquire second-life appliances where demand is highest while maintaining consistent quality across different markets.

The customer care aspect plays a key role in Beko's operations. The Reduce–Refurbish–Recycle program starts with effective customer service, aiming to resolve most issues remotely or during an engineer's visit, thereby minimizing unnecessary returns and prolonging the lifespan of appliances. For those that do need refurbishment, the appliances undergo a thorough testing process, utilizing genuine parts for repairs, and are re-audited to guarantee that they meet safety and reliability standards. This closed-loop cycle not only adds value to consumers but also strengthens the overall business realm.

As European consumers increasingly prioritize sustainability in their purchasing decisions, Beko's refurbishment strategy successfully provides high-quality, affordable second-life appliances. This approach has been aligned with the company’s broader sustainability communications framework, in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Beko tailors its messages to meet local needs while ensuring a coherent European narrative around large-scale circularity.

The centerpiece of Beko’s refurbishment strategy is the Peterborough refurbishment center located in the UK. This facility, which boasts a footprint of nearly 5,000 m², has been operating with zero waste to landfill since 2019. It is equipped with over 100,000 spare parts and effectively manages 55 packaging types. Quality audits are a crucial part of the refurbishment process, with up to 30% of refurbished units being meticulously checked from various product categories before resale.

Beyond the UK, Beko is rapidly expanding its refurbishment footprint across Europe. In Carinaro, Italy, the refurbishment center successfully handled a range of appliances—from washing machines to cooking and dishwashing units—in 2024 alone. With a workforce of 15 employees, this center positions refurbished products at prices 10–30% lower than retail, making sustainable options more attainable for consumers.

Beko also aims to reintegrate over 75% of eligible products back into the market in Romania, showcasing that circular operations can be systematic, sustainable, and market-specific. The company's recent accolades include recognition as the largest white goods company in Europe, based on market share, and a consolidated turnover of 10.6 billion Euros in 2024. Furthermore, Beko has been consistently acknowledged for its sustainability efforts, having achieved the top score in the SP Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment for six consecutive years, and has been featured in the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices for eight consecutive years.
