Welcome to the World of Shakuhachi

A Legacy in Sound Since 1913

Nestled in Adachi Ward, Tokyo, Otsuka Bamboo Instruments has been dedicated to the craft of the shakuhachi since its establishment in 1913. Under the helm of CEO Atsushi Otsuka, the company has cultivated a renowned reputation as Japan’s leading shakuhachi manufacturer. Otsuka reflects on their association with the regional branding initiative, “Adachi Brand,” stating, “This is a fantastic opportunity for us to showcase our activities in Adachi and contribute to the community.”

Spreading Joy at the Senbonzakura Festival

This determination was vividly displayed during the recent Senbonzakura Festival held at Toneri Park in Adachi. Despite the unseasonably cold and rainy weather on March 29, 2025, Otsuka and his team donned traditional kimono, parading through the festival to spread warmth through their vibrant shakuhachi music. The joy and liveliness of their performance brought smiles to the faces of attendees, showcasing the traditional power of the shakuhachi sound.

Embrace the Shakuhachi Experience at f+studio

In 2024, Otsuka Bamboo Instruments is taking a bold step forward with the opening of “f+studio” on June 2, 2024. This studio blends a soundproof lesson space with a café, providing a unique cultural hub that enhances the experience of traditional Japanese music.

With a spacious room designed to accommodate up to 20 people, f+studio caters to both individual lessons and group workshops, ensuring that everyone can immerse themselves in the world of shakuhachi. Otsuka emphasizes, “You’ll truly appreciate the beauty of the shakuhachi through live performances.” There is also a café where visitors can relax and enjoy special dishes like their spicy curry with a side of music.

Exciting Lessons and Workshops Start Soon

Starting April 2025, OTO class (音くらす), a shakuhachi lesson program, will begin. Offered at a monthly rate, these 90-minute lessons, held bi-weekly, cater to novice and experienced players alike, delivering invaluable insights and instruction from renowned performers. For those looking to try their hands at playing, a one-hour workshop is available for just 4,000 yen plus tax.

Building a Bridge to the Future

The journey to establishing f+studio took a decade of planning. Otsuka shares, “We needed a space for direct interactions with our customers, not just manufacturing instruments but sharing the essence of shakuhachi.” He hopes that this space will develop future enthusiasts of traditional Japanese music and inspire younger generations to connect with their cultural roots.

Sustainability and Preservation of Traditional Festivals

Additionally, Otsuka Bamboo Instruments is committed to preserving festival traditions and revitalizing music programs that celebrate regional festivals. The declining occurrences of traditional performances like Ohanashi and Kagura are areas of concern as festivals diminish in size. Otsuka aims to bridge these gaps by attracting new generations to the rich cultural tapestries of traditional music, promoting accessibility through initiatives like their food truck, F+BASE. This kitchen truck serves as a tactile introduction to shakuhachi music during local events.

Fusion of Tradition and Modernity

Otsuka Bamboo Instruments does not merely produce exceptional shakuhachi; they contribute to the evolution of Japanese culture. With the innovative projects of f+studio and F+BASE, they continue to challenge conventions while maintaining their legacy, ensuring that the rich essence of Shishida-ryu, a centuries-old technique, remains alive and well. Otsuka passionately explains, “The beauty of the shakuhachi resonates. It brings joy to both performers and listeners, and we wish to share that joy with as many people as possible.”

In conclusion, f+studio is not just a music practice space but a living hub for cultural expression, aiming to instill the joy of Japanese traditional music in the hearts of future generations. The story of Otsuka Bamboo Instruments is a testament to dedication, innovation, and an undying love for cultural artistry, promising an inspiring future for all who cross its threshold.
