Charichari Joins Initiative Supporting Elderly License Surrender with Trial Life Without Cars

Introduction

In a significant move to address mobility challenges faced by the elderly, Charichari Co., Ltd., which oversees the bike-sharing service 'Charichari', has announced its participation in an initiative aimed at fostering a safe transition for seniors surrendering their driver's licenses. This project, spearheaded by SafeRide Inc., offers support for elderly individuals contemplating giving up their driving privileges. Beginning December 2025, the trial will provide participants with Charichari ride tickets to enhance their mobility options, allowing them to navigate life without a car.

Background and Purpose

The issue of traffic accidents involving elderly drivers is a grave social concern in Japan, with statistics indicating that only 2% of senior drivers have surrendered their licenses. Many seniors rely heavily on their vehicles for day-to-day activities, resulting in a staggering 69% expressing anxiety about life after giving up their driving rights. To facilitate this transition smoothly, it’s crucial to ensure the availability of diverse transportation options, alongside opportunities to experience life without a car.

Charichari has been actively promoting its services to various demographics, including seniors, by organizing informative sessions and test rides at senior welfare centers. The aim is to encourage healthier, more active lifestyles among the elderly.

On the other hand, SafeRide is dedicated to alleviating the anxieties faced by seniors and their families by establishing a program that allows them to experience a life without a car for a designated period. This service has garnered recognition for its social impact and potential, becoming part of Fukuoka's social startup growth support project funded through hometown tax contributions.

In Japan's super-aged society, both companies are committed to tackling this societal challenge collaboratively, aiming to contribute to cultivating a safe and secure community in Fukuoka and beyond.

Overview of the Trial and Charichari's Role

The trial will engage approximately 30 elderly drivers residing in Fukuoka City from December 2025 to February 2026. During this three-month period, participants will minimize their use of cars and experience alternative mobility options such as Charichari, public transportation, and taxis, along with various support services.

To enhance the convenience of everyday travel, Charichari will provide participants with ride tickets. These tickets are intended for short trips, allowing seniors to access public transportation hubs, shop nearby, or enjoy leisurely strolls, thus easing their anxieties about life without driving. The goal is to help users discover a new enjoyment in mobility despite no longer having a driver's license.

Through this initiative, Charichari aims to validate the effectiveness of bike-sharing for seniors and continue delivering high-convenience services for all age groups. The endeavor contributes to sustainable and enriched community transportation solutions.
