Nscale Expands Partnership with Microsoft to Deliver 66,000+ GPUs in Portugal

In a noteworthy strategic partnership, Nscale has revealed its commitment to expand collaboration with Microsoft and Start Campus by deploying more than 66,000 NVIDIA Vera Rubin GPUs in Portugal. Set to begin in late 2027, this deployment is particularly significant as it consolidates Nscale's presence in the EU alongside previous successful implementations of NVIDIA Ultra GPUs at the SINES Data Campus, designed to serve Microsoft's extensive European customer base.

The agreement signifies a massive investment totaling €230 million in shared infrastructure, complemented by an additional €465 million for a newly constructed 200MW building at the SINES Data Campus. This expansion not only marks one of the largest AI infrastructure projects within the EU but also stands out as a defining moment for AI development in Portugal. Nscale has already made substantial strides in several global locations, having secured deployments in countries such as Norway, the UK, and the United States prior to this venture.

Looking forward, industry experts anticipate a rapid increase in demand for AI infrastructure, projected to escalate sharply through 2030 due to the limited pace at which power and new facilities can be established. Start Campus is strategically equipped, being fully permitted for a substantial 1.2GW capacity, ensuring that it is well-positioned to accommodate the burgeoning AI demands in Europe.

Robert Dunn, CEO of Start Campus, echoed these sentiments by declaring that "Sines is emerging as a primary hub for large-scale AI, enhancing Europe's capabilities to foster sovereign AI advancements centered around sustainability, resilience, and long-term governance. Expanding our existing agreement, Nscale's investment in Sines will enable one of Europe's largest deployments of NVIDIA Vera Rubin NVL72 systems, and focus will remain on achieving secure, sustainable, and globally connected infrastructure."

Diving deeper into the specifics, the SINES Data Campus is vital as it operates on 100% renewable energy and is designed for maximum efficiency with an exceptional Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) target of 1.1 and a Water Usage Effectiveness (WUE) target of 0, harnessing the natural cooling power of the ocean.
