The Growing Gap in Online Visibility for Small Businesses
In a new report released by BrightLocal, it has come to light that a considerable disconnect exists between small business owners' confidence in their online visibility and their actual performance in essential marketing channels. The report is based on a survey conducted among over 1,000 small to medium-sized business owners in the United States.
Findings from the Report
The survey revealed that despite a resounding 84% of small business owners believing that customers can easily find them online, their marketing strategies are increasingly misaligned with consumer behaviors. Interestingly, while 71% of consumers rely on Google for local business searches, only 22% of small business owners prioritize Google among their top channels for customer acquisition. The preference for acquiring customers seems to lean heavily towards word-of-mouth referrals (35%), followed closely by social media (33%) and AI tools (23%). This stark contrast indicates a worrying trend for businesses that may be neglecting their online presence where it matters most.
Moreover, while 85% of the surveyed small businesses have established a Google Business Profile (GBP), just 35% actively maintain their presence on the platform. Alarmingly, 21% of these profiles have not been updated in over three months. Myles Anderson, CEO and co-founder of BrightLocal, said, "When 84% of owners feel confident in their online presence, yet nearly half fall short of basic review thresholds, and seven out of ten consumers rely on a Google ecosystem that businesses under-prioritize, confidence becomes a blind spot."
The Crucial Role of Online Reviews
Another significant aspect highlighted in the report is the review gap, which continues to be a source of friction between consumers' expectations and the practices of business owners. Notably, 47% of small businesses have fewer than 20 Google reviews, exactly matching the proportion of consumers who avoid businesses lacking this number of reviews. The importance of reviews has never been more apparent, with 89% of consumers expecting business owners to respond to feedback actively. However, only 51% of small business owners regularly engage with reviews.
The findings stress that there is considerable room for improvement. Proactively seeking reviews can hugely influence a business's overall online reputation. About 64% of owners actively request reviews, and businesses that do so tend to accumulate higher review volumes. For example, 57% of businesses that ask consistently have between 11 and 50 reviews, a stark contrast to 50% among those that do not ask.
Embracing the Age of AI
Artificial intelligence is rapidly becoming a game-changer in local marketing, but the foundations for its integration seem shaky. The research indicates that 86% of small business owners are aware of AI tools like ChatGPT and Gemini being used for local searches, with 67% claiming a decent understanding of these AI search mechanisms. However, the disparity between awareness and action is troubling.
While 65% of small business owners are working to optimize their visibility in AI search results, only 35% actively maintain their GBP. Additionally, 41% keep their websites updated, and only 26% engage with citation and directory sites. These statistics highlight a fundamental oversight—while many business owners are taking steps to harness AI, they are neglecting foundational elements that could enhance their visibility in AI outputs significantly.
Conclusion
The local businesses that will thrive in 2026 are those that adeptly navigate the crucial platforms where customers are making final decisions. By bridging the gap between confidence and actionable marketing strategies, small business owners can improve their likelihood of success in a highly competitive digital landscape. As the marketing world evolves towards social media and AI, understanding and leveraging traditional resources like Google is critical for sustained growth and visibility.
