Embracing Community Engagement: Okinawa Students' Work Experience
In a commendable initiative to foster community involvement and social responsibility, Okinawa Japan KANZAI, a group subsidiary of Nippon Kanzai Holdings, welcomed two second-year students from the Okinawa Prefectural School for Special Needs Education for a practical work experience at Uruma City Hall. This educational program took place from May 25 to June 5, 2026, striving to connect the students' academic learning with real-world applications.
Program Background
Established in 1990, the Okinawa Prefectural School for Special Needs Education is dedicated to promoting vocational and social independence among students with mild intellectual disabilities. The school emphasizes practical work experiences, incorporating them into its curriculum to ensure students receive six such opportunities over their three years of study. Building on last year’s successful collaboration, Okinawa Japan KANZAI has once again partnered with the school to provide crucial exposure to workplace environments.
Work Activities Undertaken
During their time at Uruma City Hall, the students were actively engaged in various cleaning tasks, including maintaining the cleanliness of floors, hallways, restrooms, and collecting garbage. Their responsibilities extended to cleaning public areas frequented by visitors, creating a realistic working environment that mirrored the daily responsibilities of city hall staff. Additionally, the students participated in commuting training using public transportation, gaining valuable experience in time management and navigation.
Day-by-Day Experience
Initially greeted with nerves on the first day, the students gradually became more confident in their roles, learning the proper techniques for cleaning from experienced staff. Within a few days, they were not only proficient in their tasks but also began greeting visitors with warm “good mornings,” showcasing their improvement in communication skills. Under guided supervision, they learned effective mop and broom handling techniques, ultimately working independently as their confidence grew.
In a reflection of their experience, one student expressed gratitude for the supportive staff who went out of their way to provide refreshments amid the hot weather, while thanking them for the varied lessons learned over the two weeks. The school also echoed their appreciation, noting the significant learning opportunities provided and their intention to share these insights with other students.
Contributions to Community and Growth
Okinawa Japan KANZAI observed significant positive changes in the two participants throughout the program, noting expanded task responsibilities and enhanced communication abilities, enabling smoother greetings and reporting. This initiative illustrates how corporate involvement can enhance social participation opportunities for individuals with special needs, aligning with the company’s commitment to community support and involvement.
As a registered partner of the Okinawa SDGs initiative, Okinawa Japan KANZAI continues to emphasize its social contributions through activities such as volunteer clean-ups and participation in regional health events. The organization remains dedicated to constructive ties with the community while addressing the current social needs and enhancing environmental safety through its core business operations.
